i use 2 unit of 12v dc computer fan to cool my 2 feet tank, manage to pull down 2 degree compare to the ambient temperature
good point is need not have to worry that the fan might submerge into the tank causing electric short circuit, moreover dc fan are more silent compare to those aqua fan

bad point is need to replenish water everyday

yes it is possible as reccommended by some bros in this forum on how to make your own fan http://www.petfrd.com/forum/articles...rticle&artid=6

As i have a few spare CPU fans lying around at home, i only needed a AC-DC adaptor to complete the DIY project. For me it depends on the cost, if the entire DIY project costs the same as getting a new Aquarium Fan, go for the latter.

    Pros:
    Cheap

    Cons:
Might not look nice aesthetically especially on the wiring bit as some tidying up like hiding of the red/black wire of the fan with wire "shrink-wrap" etc.

The transformer also kaputs usually at the wrong time depending on your luck. So far I think lowering the power to 9V gives me acceptable noise levels for a 2.5" fan to cool a 16" shrimp tank
