thanks craftman....I was just trying to be candid and probably should have used the word "Eheim User". Will try to be more careful here.

The water going into the cannister is a function of gravity so it does not really matter if you have more filter wool. I believe the The inlet leading to the impeller should be a clear path of water without any media in the way, that's how the cannister is built I believe.

However, Try not to change the flow, in or out , too much. A motor is designed to function at certain rate and we should just let it run that way. unless you can change the rpm of the motor, by limiting the inlet, you are forcing the motor to go into overdrive to process the same volume of water, if not it will be driving air, and by limiting the outlet, you are just creating a nozzle effect, ie nothing has changed as far as volume turnover is concern.Actually the Eheim Classic gives a very good idea how a cannister should be run, it was sold without any adjustable valve because that's how it should be for max efficiency.

not true. there are no moving parts in the pump head and is sealed (waterproof). this is the stator part of the motor. the other half, rotor, is the impeller which is the only moving part. and you need not lubricate this as water acts as a lubricant as well as a coolant.

Thanks for the clarification. I guess when the flow down there isn't really any way to bring back the kind of flow rate when you buy it new, other then cleaning the impeller.

I think parts are always going to be expensive because it's a service, not a mass selling finished product. Service becomes more expensive without fail.

I dread breaking something especially the impellers. Looking at the stock LFS keep can tell you how long they've kept it! It's so dusty!
