any LFS tells yamato is the same as malayan, LAUGH [] [] [] at them. any one trying to sell you malayan at $1, [] [] PUNCH them and never buy anything from them again!
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

yamatos got this tiny little spots on their body and they're much bigger than malayans. malayans got this white stripe running down their backs. and some of them happen to have different colours (e.g. some can be slightly greenish, bluish, reddish or just plain brown) or stay lightly mottled. they're much smaller than yamatos. yamatos can be slightly pinkish. well i hope that helps.

So far the yamatoes I bought are mostly 90 cents to $1 each. Have read some posts reporting 80 cents per shrimp. Don't know the size though.

I have bought pretty BIG (Yes BIGGGGGGG) ones from a LFS in Changi Village at 90 cents. I think that was a pretty good buy....

Nature, there is no definite good or bad, it really depends on what you want to use them for. Any shrimps are only good as secondary algae prevention but might add some different look to your aquarium.

Hey, I remember Gan selling his malayan shrimps at 60 for $10.

Hmm .. if someone can get 100 at $10, then Gan is selling it at quite a high price...
