Fin Rot vs Broken fin

Can someone please enlighten me how to differentiate between a fin/tail being nibbed off by a fish and the diease, fin-rot?

eh, one is injury, the other is infection
so basically, after the injury, if the immune system of the fish is not up to scratch, you'll see infection

Actually, what I mean is that if I see a broken fin, how do I differentiate the difference of a torn fin resulting from fin-root verus nibbed fin?

Is there any visual difference? The reason is if it is fin-rot, I will have to treat the fish/tank while if it is nibbed by other fish, I will have to find the culprit!
