I got a low-tech tank in my office. There is about 12 CRS in it.
It has a bubble filter and normal gravel (not soil).
It is now badly infested with hair algae.

I am thinking of revamping it, and use Gex soil instead. Hopefully, I get better yield from my CRS. Right now, I only got 1 pregnant CRS and it seems to have drop some eggs.

    1) How much Gex soil is required for a 1.5 x 1 ft tank? How much is it anyway?
    2) How preparation must be carried out to the soil? Wash it?
    3) What is the best way to replace the gravel with soil? This tank is my only tank and it is in my office.

I will suggest manually remove the hair algae, add some malayan shrimp to clean up the rest, 10% - 20% water change every week, and add a canister filter for better filtration.

If you still prefer to revamp it, I will advice to house your CRS somewhere first, no possible to add new soil to your tank with your CRS inside.

    To your questions:
    1) You proberbly need around 6-9L depend how thick you want it to be, 2 to 3 inches are good enough.
    2) New soil does not require to wash it.
    3) House your CRS somewhere, clean up the tank then start it new.

    Just my 2 cents
