when Lapis sands turns black

hi,

I cover my 1ft tank with 1"thick of lapis gravels... I wonder y one portion about 2x2" area of these area the gravels turns black?? there no plant in this area. I try to dug this area, and the tank water become foul smell and I can see a lot tubiflex worm breeding in groups. But I never feed my fish with worms before...

please avoid using SMS lingo in AQ

anaerobic soil simply means the absence of air in the soil, the foul air are the produces from bacteria in the anaerobic state
