For colorful LARGE fresh waterfish I think a school of adult Puntis Dennisonii would easily fit the bill. Otherwise, selected varieties of Discus and adult Boseman's Rainbowfish would be my choice.

Discus are too expensive, african cichlids are too territorial. Guppies are too small, too shortlife have a tendency to be fin nipped. I think kribensis will be great.

Haha - tell him to go marine then. Only way to get anything more colorful.

Tell him this freshwater aquarium appreciation is like being a wine connoisseur, its the subtle shades and glimpses of bright color that make it worth while. Marine aquarium appreciation, is comparable to being a hard liquor aficionado the colors are blaringly bright and there is no subtle aesthetics in Marine fish displays.

Hahaha..... You're so very right! But the challenges of having a marine setup is not going to be so straightforward since there's more regular testing of water parameters, can be quite a hassle for busy working people like most of us, that's why after keeping fishes for almost 30yrs, i'm still into freshwater.

Hahas....he just switched from marine to freshwater...
I think he still misses the brightly colored marine fishes and cannot understand that freshwater fishes do not resemble the marine ones in terms of its coloration

    I have 2 suggestions :

    1. Have a low tech planted tank with discus instead of the traditional plain discus setup. The contrasting colours of the background, discus, substrate and plants will bring out the beauty of the whole tank and also the discus.

    2. Keep african cichlids. Your friend's HUGE tank is the BEST for keeping these fishes! Alot of times because of space constrains, we're not able to do a very elaborate rockscape. With the right colour combination of cichlids and nice rockscape, the whole tank will look fantastic! It'll bring out the true beauty and character of these fishes. My personal favourite would be the tropheus but unfortunately CF is no longer in business so you won't be able to get the rarer ones from germany. I've seen some REALLY NICE tropheus setups at www.cichlid-forum.com that makes you dhrool non stop.
