Are you able to attach a picture here? It would be easier for the expert here to diagnose the disease.
Hi everyone. I'm have a new tank and have some neon tetras that have some white spots on them. They're kind of shiny and one if them is pretty bad. Does anyone know what this might be and what I should do? Can my other fish catch whatever this is? I've heard about neon tetra disease but not really sure what it is. Any help would be appreciated. I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this. I'm new here.![]()

I tried to take a picture but they're such small fish that you can't really see it. I'm noticing now that they're losing their colour too. The white stuff looks kind of slimey on the worst one. The others are just white spots and now a couple of them are swimming weird. I'll try to take a photo tomorrow when there is more light.

Very likely, your fishes have contracted ich. Do a search on itch in this forum and you might find the answer to the cure

What's the current temperature in your tank now?
For a start to cure itch, suggest you turn on the heater for the tank.Guess it is pretty cold in Canada now. Slowly increase the temperature to 30 Degree Celsius(86 degree Fahrenheit) . Do not immediately turn on the heater with 30 Degree Celsius(86 degree Fahrenheit) as this will cause more stress to the fish due to temperature difference, do it gradually over a few days. Monitor for a week or two, the white dot should be gone.
I'll check out the ich and see what I come up with. The temp in my tank is 78 which is what I was told I should keep my tank at. Will a higher temp affect my other fish? I have angel fish, gouramis and guppies in there too. I woke up this morning and one of the tetras was already dead. Thanks guys.![]()

Hi missgingersnap,
Sorry to hear that, I had some cardinals in my tank which has white stuff close to the tail once. What i did was just increase the water change frequency and through time, it's gone. By the way, fishes there in Canada sure are expensive....
Hi EddyTing. I did a water change today and went and bought some ick medicine. 3 neons died so far but the other 5 are looking ok. Hopefully this treatment will prevent any more from dying and passing this on to my other fish. Oh, and everything is expensive in canada. lol
"Whitespot" disease is Ichthyophthirius multifiliis.
Shortened forms are ICH though some spell it as ICK but not "itch"...![]()
celticfish
It is a good day to die!!!
I finally uploaded an avatar and Cupid is dead!!!![]()
try waterlife protozine.....it a good medicine to cure ICH
Another medicine which I had success with curing ich is Interpet's No.6 Anti White Spots.
Whichever medication you plan to use, please follow the instructions.

Actually few weeks back one of my fifty cardinal's also have this ich problem but after feeding them with Sera Fishtamin the ice was gone within few day. Now all my fishes do not have such problems.

I think I have the ick problem under control but after medicating(I followed instructions) I had a gourami and an albino catfish die suddenly. The guy at the fish place said it might have been stress from the medication. This is a new tank and I can't get the water under control. The ammonia is anywhere from .5 to 2 and I'm doing partial water changes everyday to try to keep that down. Everyone in there looks pretty perky at the moment and I hope I don't lose anymore. I realize now that I put too many fish in at once so it's my own fault. Any other suggestions to get my water right would be appreciated. Thanks all for helping and taking the time to post!
first of all, stop adding stuff to your water
surefire way to screw up your water chemistry is by mixing and matching different kinds of medication
do more frequent water changes
salt will both kill the ich free swimming spores and reduce osmotic pressure so the fish won't be leaking fluids into the water as much
you'd have to check the exact dosage in the forum, i can't remember how much to use
I only added one type of ick medication...no mixing and matching and I'm already changing the water every day. I'll have to read up on the salt. Is that only for a saltwater tank? Mine is freshwater.
Forgot to mention UV lights may be helpful in such situation too.![]()

Thanks everyone. I have the ick problem under control but my water levels are all crazy. The ph is high and so is the ammonia. I'm doing 25% water changes everyday. Should I be doing 50% and does doing a water change stress the fish out even more?
