I have been consistently having this unexplained problem of very cloudy water in my tank. That is so even after changing the water, it just gets back to square one after only a few hours. While it has not affected the health of the fish currently, my concern is that the water may not be very suitable for living. I have changed 40% of my water twice yesterday, including washing the filter box and discarding the filter sponge, replacing it will new ones. When i woke up today, my water is still coloured white and it stinks. It just never seem to end. If anyone has any idea what causes such problem, or knows how to deal with it, kindly offer suggestions. This below information may help:

    Tank: 60cm
Filter: Dyna 600 box powered filter with activated carbon and sponge
    Inhabitants: 2 western rainbowfish
    2 boeseman rainbowfish
    2 neon rainbowfish
    2 banded rainbowfish
    2 'crossing rainbowfish' (unidentified)
    1 parkinson rainbowfish
    1 siamese fighter
    1 opaline gourami
    1 angelfish
    1 banjo catfish
    1 striped raphael
    2 featherfin catfish
Decors: Black fine gravel, 1 large and 1 small driftwood, pebbles. Java fern and 1 unidentified plant

    Please help thanks.

maybe bacteria boom...changing too much water too often doesnt help to cultivate BB. also washing filter without using your tank water will also destory all BB resulting to cloudy water.

do a search in this forum and the issue has been repeated discussed. good luck

No, it was set up a year ago. The situation is not so bad today, even though, the water is still relatively cloudy

Could it be the gravel or your filter isn't working properly?

The filter is working well, even though it doesn't seem to be powerful enough to handle that amount of waste produced, constantly clogging. Whats with gravel anyway? It hides a lot of faeces underneath, but should not be the cause of water getting extremely cloudy suddenly. I figured out that the problem is with my carbon. I have not change for a year to save on cost. Everything got back to normal after changing the carbon in my filter. Thanks for all your help.

You might be changing your water too often. I keep Discus in my planted tank and often do very large water changes which the fish like, but when I have changed too much water, the tank can become cloudy.

So I do not think you need to worry about water quality.

I suggest that you slow down on the water changes and see how it goes

Hell united have you tried those "Clearwater" addictives? I wonder how effective and safe are they? I'm tempted to try some myself.

Never tried before, should be safe but i prefer the water to be a little coloured so that the colour of the fishes can be brought out nicely. You can try using UGF, it makes your water clear even though your gravel need to be sufficiently deep. Also, there is a lot of controversies about UGF.
