    Hi guys,
Im new to shrimps tank. Im thinking of setting up a small tank (about 30cm by 18cm by 24cm) on my study table. I am wondering if i could just plant hair grass in the tank with just lights, a fan, no co2. Will the plants grow well? Also is it possible i include a driftwood tied with moss(what kind of moss will be suitable) in this set up?

You can do this successfully without injected CO2 and the plants will grow well. You should choose plants that will fit the size of your tank.

3 key things to take note:
    • minimum light threshold (depending on the plants you are keeping)
    • nutrient rich bottom (CO2 is actually provided there)
    • good filtration
There are already numerous articles about it on this forum alone. Do a search and you should be able to find them.

Dont know about hairgrass, but i have java moss, singapore moss and taiwan moss - they are ok in my low tech tank, although a few bottom strands turned black for taiwan moss. no fert, no fan, no co2 .

You must consider what type of shrimp you want to keep. They are many shrimp species in different enviroment.

Using ADA soil will be sufficient.

Hair grass and moss will be good choice for shrimp tanks. Having a fan will be good as shrimps prefer lower temperature.

I kept a low tech tank with java moss and light. I only have light on for about 4-5 hours a day. My desk is not exposed to direct sunlight. Everything seems good.

I intend to keep some CRS, cherry and sakura shrimps, is it ok? Is there a guide on what kind of shrimps suit what kind of condition of water? I got another question, can i keep US Fissidens instead of moss on this low tech tank? Will it survive and grow well?

Maybe you can try with those hardy shrimps like cherry or sakura first, skip the crs until you know much about the water condition. Yes, you can keep US fissidens but just remember the water temperature must be cooling around 25 to 27 degrees.

shrimp tank usually do well with either moss or java ferns. Hair grass are abit particular. I had Jp variant hair grass and they didn't do well in a non co2 setup, but i've seen some bros with regular HG shrimp tank that were placed in office which did extremely well with no ferts or the later.
