    protein

I got this on my small tank too, best way to get rid of it is just lay a piece of kitchen roll over it and it will stick to that, my stuff was really bad, by end of the day it was like a coating of wax on the surface but after a week or so of removing it every day it stopped coming back. Its pretty harmless really, just remove it when it get's too thick and eventually it will subside.
    kind regards,

Naquatics, you can try to get some snails like nerite or zebra snails to do the job. They will crawl to the water surface and eat up the protein. They do are good job especial for small tank. Some ramhorn snails will do the job too. They will stick to the surface protein film and float around with the surface current.

    Hope it helps.

Endlers or guppies are good in doing such job also, clearing those oily surface.

If there is air bubble to break the water surfsace, it can prevent this harmless layer of film. Else can just make use of kitchen towel to place it on the surface and lift it up.

Solved at SG$7.50! Used a hang-filter with built-in surface skimmer! Yay! Nicer flow too!

I recently introduced a few boraras into my shrimp tank and discovered that the protein built up reduced really significantly. These boraras are at the surface waiting for me to feed them whenever I pass by the tank.

Learn it the hard way .. I bought sponge and covered the intake. As for the skimmer inlet, I stuffed big pore sponge in it .. I guess its more of the survival of the fittest and smartest ..
