SERA KH Test Kit

Hi All,

Has anyone use SERA KH test kit to test carbonate/water hardnesss?
I recently bought one, to my surprise the instruction are in other European language except English.
It doesn't have Colour-Code Card to check or to verify against, so I do not know if my water condition is good or bad.

Anyone can give some info....??

I use SERA, mine have the English instruction. Anyway it is quite simple. Put 5ml of the sample water into the tube, drop the solution one by one until it turn color to yellow. Make sure you stir the sample water for each drop. Your kH = number of drop solution

You can double the accuracy by using more sample water, for example 10ml but them the KH would be half number of drop (4 drop = 2 kH)

I did follow the picture instruction, though 'agak-agak' that it is correct.
But the tested water hardly change color, blueish, only when you view against bright background. So I do not know what it means.

When I tested for pH, it was under desired parameter - abt 6.5, light green color. Funny, they have English version for pH test kit.

What is the ideal or acceptable parameter for KH?
Also, any other important Test-Kits I should have for planted/freshwater aqua.?

let me go back and scan the instruction, assuming I can find it

for planted tank, if you really want you only need pH and CO2. I would say it is optional, the only thing that I still using is drop checker to measure CO2 level.

I have the CO2 Drop checker too - Dymax. Funny thing, the solution remain yellow since I put it in the tank about 2 weeks ago. Referring to the chart on the box, yellow means my pH is too high - parameter 8.
I'm confuse...

did you use ADA Aquasoil or other thing that effect your water chemistry? if yes, you need kH = 4 instead of your tank water. If I'm not mistaken the color chard for Dymax based on kH = 3-4, was written in the color chard, unless they change the packaging.

Other way to test is take out the drop checker and leave it out of water for a while, it should turn to blue

No bro, I use GEX, black subtrates for plant & shrimps.
I use Seachem Fluorish Excel and Seachem Potassium, Flora Gro Fert, DIY
CO2 (yeast/sugar).


Ok got it, will try to take out the drop checker into open air.
