I have gotten 3 male rams and one of them seems to be the all time big bully. One of his victim has fins that are badly nipped and the other, even though bigger got chased all over. Is this behaviour normal? I was at Teo on Sunday and those Rams he has in his 9 ft tank seems to be living in peace with each other. What's the secret?

Can Apistos be mixed with Rams in a planted tank?

Should be posted at cichlid section.

I'll like to know how big yr tank is. Cichlids by nature are very aggreasive. Being an Alpha male doesn't have to be the biggest but the fiercest.

Teo's tank is a 9ft which can have many rams inside without conflict over space and food.

Oh and yes Apisto and rams can be together as both of them falls under the dwarf cichlid catagory.
    Cheers!

It is a 4ft planted tank. The other tank mates are 85 cardinals, 2 panchax, 4 otos, 3 SAE and 10 yamatos. I also have a 2ft driftwood with Taiwan Moss.

Plant densely and provide multiple feeding spots is a way to reduce aggression....less they see each other..the better.[]

I'm just curious. For those of you who have rams, how many do you have? Are they of the same sex?

Is there a rule of thumb on the number to have in a 4ft planted tank?

If I also want to introduce Apistos, what's the number and sex? Is there a need to provide cave like structure in the tank?

For Rams u need not any cave like structures they are substrade spwaners but for apisto , they need medias to lay their eggs on which can be wood to anything you can think of.

It's often best to keep a pair or trio in a tank like yours. when i had my 6footer i dump a quad which is 1 male 3 females in it...they spawn non stop.

You have to ask yrself if u're spawning them or just keeping them for viewing.
    Cheers!

    Hi Benetay

Does the male ram fight with, nip, chase the female?

Just curious, does rams take pellets food or only live food and frozen blood worms, I bought 2 pairs but they doesn't seem to go after the pellet food.

They probably just need to get used to it... My Rams take flakes, granules, pellets, freeze dried, and frozen foods.

Mine was agressive to each other initially. But after 2 to 3 weeks, they are in fact like best pals now [:]
