    Hi guys/ladies,

I recently bought a Atman cf 1200 canister filter. I ran it through a pail of water and find the water surface full of oil . I do not dare to use it for my tank and is wondering wat way is there to get ride of the oil.

    Thanks in advance

that probably petroleum jelly used to keep the rubber part live longer. It should be safe, infact I always apply ptroleum jelly to my filter during maintenance.

The petroleum jelly won't affect the fauna? In fact i just bought a new atman HOF and i discovered there's oil in it, i rinsed thoroughly with water and thought that it's safe for my guppy fries. Sadly, it killed all but 6 of my fries after running for 2-3 days with that filter. I scooped the remaining 6 out into another clean container with treated water and the 6 revert back to normal again...so do clean properly and don't think the lubricant/petroleum jelly is always safe for your fauna.

Out of anger, I clean the whole filter with soap to remove the oil slick and soak them in water for a few days to make sure it's safe...
