for planted tanks, can we on the lights in the night instead of during the daytime. Reasons being we are at home during the night. However read somewhere that planted do their work during the day. Any advises ?

Re: On lights in the night ?

Plants need periods of daylight and night-time in order to photosynthesize properly and remain healthy. Having your lights on during the night i don't think is advisable for a planted tank. The only way around it might be if the tank is in total darkness during the true daytime, then having the lights on in the true night time. I have no idea if its possible. My initial thought would be not :S

agree, as long as theres only 1 source of light within the day and you can simulate daylight/night, it should be fine.

maybe all the while i have been keeping fishes. I only on the lights in the night when I am home to view them.

Which means for planted, i have to do the opposite, on the lights when no one home and off them when i am back in the night

Probably what you can do is spread the 10hrs lighting period into 2 segments. From 9am to 2pm and 6pm to 11pm. Unless you are only home after 11pm, you should be able to enjoy your scaping at least for a few hours. Need a timer, though.

Re: On lights in the night ?

My lights are on for 8 hours a day. I split up the 8 hours into half, that is... from lights on from 6 am to 10am. 6am because thats the time i wake up, and its nice to just look at the fishes while i'm having my breakfast.

Lights go off from 10am, and only comes back on from 6pm to 10pm. I get to see my tank from 8pm to 10pm.

My tank is in one corner of my living room which does not have direct sunlight. So, while you still get normal daylight on the tank, its slightly dark.

So far, my plants seem to like it.

My reasoning is simple. I have my tank so that I can enjoy it.

Re: On lights in the night ?

    My lightings are from 8pm - 6am

no problems for my plants at all. Partially it is also because my tank is kept away from light (Corner of my house refer to my avatar) during they day so the only light source would be from my lightings at night

    Hope this helps!

I have mine on at 2.30pm till 11.30pm. So far so good to me. The only time sunlight hits my tank would be in the evening about 5 plus. By the time, my lights are on. But have some algae on the glass though.

I think not really advisable to on the lights all nite. It might promote algae growth.

My lights are on from 4.30pm till 1030pm.

    What time are u home?

I do a 12pm to 8pm light schedule for the plants to photosynthesize. I also have a 1 hr window every morning 7-8am and night 11-12pm for my viewing pleasure when I come back. This small window also happens to prevent excessive algae growth.

    Hope it helps.
