Hi bros, I've been looking for more information before starting a tank up to rear CPOs and hopefully breed them. Thanks in advance for any input you might have.

Hard to find much information about them online or in the forum.

Interested to know Ideal pH/GH/KH, how "non-aggressive" they are towards each other, as it will be a species only tank, and how densely they can be populated.

How sensitive are they to changes in water parameters and water quality?

I was thinking of possibly getting a Dennerle 20L Nanocube for this tank, if so can I have 3 or 4 of them together? Can't find out how territorial they are.

This is what I managed to pull from the web (www.planetinverts.com), can anyone add to this?

    English name:
    Dwarf Orange Crayfish (CPO)

    Scientific name

    Water Parameters:
    pH 6.8 - 8.0

    Breeding:
Females produce 30+ Babies after 2-3 weeks.

    Behaviour:
Non-Aggressive. Will not destroy plants or gravel.

Re: Info needed : Dwarf Orange Crayfish - CPO - Cambarellus patzcuarensis "Orange"

3-4 CPO in a 20L is no problem at all... Easily done.. But I'll advise you to have a few items:

    1) Soil, Sand etc for them to travel around the tank with ease.
    2) Ferns/plants for them to nib or hide
    3) Deco/driftwood or other hiding place for them, preferably 1 crayfish a hole depending how big is the hiding place.
    4) Staple shrimp/crayfish food with occasional treat of moderate calcium food

    Additional enhancements:
    1) Filter and bubble to improve air quality
    2) Mini sucker like Oto to rid your tank of algae, no loaches or any other fishes to avoid them attacking the crayfish when they are moulting or the little crayfish you might have in the future

Relatively the information you got is rather accurate. Probably a tip would be to have temperature of 26oc - 27oc range for easy breeding purpose

so basically they need conditions similar to CRS?

Will they attack shrimp or shrimplets?

They won't thrive well in conditions with CRS for long as they need a mild alkaline pH 7-8 for best conditions. And generally they can't catch shrimps or shrimplets but accidents do occur and they might eat some of them up if they get their hands on them

    Hi there,

CPO usually are highly aggressive towards everything else. Here with us we had 4 in a 54 L tank and they caught all the shrimps in there (nominal form of "Red Fire"), Apple snails, Guppys, Gammarus… just everything. Sou You see their exist very different experiences. Might be there are several breeing branches which are more or less aggressive but we know grom other keepers where they also attacked shrimp etc. in the same tank and other keepers who swear they are absolutely harmless.

Besides from that the keeping itself is relatively easy and from our knowing they are not that sensitive to special water conditions.
    Cheerio, BEASTIE ;-)

Is temperature a concern? I heard they need cooler temperature to breed.

I think cool temperature will increase the probability of breeding though its not a must.

Hmm yes that is quite strange, because I observed at at one of LFS, they actually house their CPOs in the same tanks as some of their Grade A CRS.

I don't think any LFS would dare to do that if their stock was aggressive

You reply me in a thread that stopped in 2009, what are you doing replying me in the place i referenced you to .
Don't worry about it, i only nudged you. If your blatantly using sms lingo like some other chap out there...
Then infraction will follow soon for those who do that .

Heed my advice for now and try to reply using formal email replies. It's quite effective.
And you can call me Felix, it is fine with me. In the end i am just another hobbyist also, holding the order and keeping stuff neat for others to reference is something worth the effort.

Now back on track with the topic, maybe you can do some search in google too... even when some searches lead you back.

Hi, does anyone know if CPO saddled, for example, like cherry shrimps? Thought if they do, we can identify a male and female without having to look under it

my cpos attacks everything it can get their hands on. i left some pond snails and malayan snails in the same tank, and i can see corpse and empty shells everywhere. maybe the amount of aggression varies

as for the "sexing" part, you can put them in those transparent containers and shine a torch at their belly. that is how i choose my cpos at aquariums

Wow you got very hungry CPOs. So far mine have not gone to that extend. Whew...

Aquariums, do you mean LFS? Do they allow you to do that? So far i knew NA individually pack the CPO and some are labelled 'M' or 'F' else you can take a peek at the underside.

oops i meant malayan shrimps. my cpos are quite fierce if you ask me. they frequently charge towards me, with their claws open, whenever i look at them hahaa~

and by aquarium i meant LFS. i am not sure if LFS is a 'legal' word in here hee
