Vaseline (from pharmacy and used for treating nappy rash) should do. But if rubber causing leaks, time to change.

I just apply to it and put it back into the filter? Will it pollute the water?

I would advise against applying petroleum or vaseline jelly to O-Rings for the same reason they advise you not to apply it to condoms.

It can break down the rubber causing it to crack or become brittle over time.

A safer alternative if you really feel you need to do this is Glycerin. You can buy it at most pharmacies or at Scientific supply stores (used to lubricate glass parts to be inserted into rubber fittings)

Eer you cannot compare a thick o-ring rubber to a thin piece of condom. Btw even if the condom tear you will also not be able to see it unless you go and blow the condom.

I have been using petroleum (Cost only $2.20) on my Eheim for years and actually it slow down the process of wear and tear.

Re: type of gel used to protect the canister rubber

You're right I just went and reread my Eheim manual, they actually say to use "Vaseline" petroleum jelly.
I believe this might be because the O-ring is Polyurethane and not Rubber.

It has nothing to do with the thickness of the rubber, I believe its because the Eheim O-rings are not rubber.

Well as long as you put the gel, it should last you at lease 5 years.

I just got a new O-ring for my 2026 but I don't recall it being so cheap! Is it a 3rd party one?
