What size nano?
If willing to lower pH and water hardness, can consider some of the smaller wild betta species.
I've always noticed that small fish requires a minimum of at least 6 to do well, even if these fishes don't school. In my experience, i've encountered various tetras, cyprinids becoming highly predominate and behaves highly aggressive when you keep around 3-4.
I have tried livebearers though 1 male 2 female seems to be fine.

Currently keeping many wild betta species and other anabantoids.
dario dario also comes to mind, as do apistos (depending on tank size)
you can consider scalet badis (dario dario).

but the LFS here don't usually stock in females and these little guys prefer live food
Thanks all for the feedback,
badis did cross my mind, however i recalled them taking either frozen food/ worms/bbs or live ones. Theres no accounts of them prefering hikari pellets.
Another option is the indian puffer but that too eats worms. Maybe i should drop a 3-4 pellets per week to feed my pond snails, which will in turn spawn and feed the puffer on a weekly basis.
