Thats the reason always collect at least 2-3 pairs of the same fish (wild-caughts) if you really want to talk about breeding for line and quality. I have read that the minimum to maintain the line is at least 6 pairs.
You can do this alternatively, by acquiring new fish (wild) of the same strain/species to be spawned to the subsequent offspring from your original pair. It is not necessary to maintain multiple tanks for several pairs, when you can do this as and when required.

To be honest, you can easily group spawn them, as they would in the wild. Multiple pairs in say a 2 ft or 3 ft tank that will be spawning at any random moment. This will prevent any possible inbreeding since the resulting fry would be from different parents. Of course in such a situation, the males would usually have ragged fins from all the fighting. Likewise with the females. In confined spaces they tend not to fight as much due to population densities. The DATZ book states this regarding population density in the wild.

    Re: Your Favourite Apistogramma!

Yup stormhawk as stated in combi 1 and 5 from my previous post.

Never tried group spawning before. But 2 pairs in a 3ft was a suicidal attempt. Bare in mind my tank was very heavily planted that time with many line of sights broken by woods and plant growth. The weaker male would be whacked out by the alpha. Ouch if your pair cost you more then 100bucks. My recommendation is still to spawn them in individual pairs to prevent unecessary losses when your fishes are so costly.

    Re: Your Favourite Apistogramma!

2 pairs might be tough for a 3 footer. They have a territorial zone that usually overlaps in such tanks and when they meet they will fight. I'm thinking more along the lines of 5-6 pairs in a tank that size, with adequate plant cover and possible spawning sites. I think those folks in the US go by that method in cases where they have no space for holding multiple pairs in separate tanks.

I've been to benetay's house before, and in his 6 footer I remember seeing some Ap. sp. "Mamore Red?" all in a group swimming about. The sheer size and plant cover was enough to allow them to live in peace.

Though you have a point on keeping them separate due to the cost of the pairs. But from seeing how Scope places his apistos in a community setting in a small space, it is workable, except the pairs won't spawn in such a setup with so many fish.

    Re: Your Favourite Apistogramma!

after a period of hiatus from apistogramma, heres my 4 months old setup..

Fishes include Apisto. Barlowi, Apisto. Elizabethae(very %#^! hard to find nowadays, many thanks to Bro Bernie and Jitticus), and Discrossus Maculatus.

My goal is to breed the apistos i currently have. Honestly, i suck at breeding apistos because whenever there are fries, i tend to feed them the wrong type of food(Eg. tetrabits, hoping the mum will chew and feed them the remnants). I really can't imagine having to raise BBS daily, so i have equipped myself with decap BBS and baby plankton in a bottle.

Additionally, i used to use HOF, canister.. actually realize no need. Now, i use airpump (one air pump channel 3 tanks, damn good plus fries born not scared get sucked in).

    Heres the setup:

    5 Tier Rack

    Conquer 2 Tier First

Marle, you got the five tier stand at Giant is it? I am also getting the smaller version for my fish tanks. Each tier of your stand can withstand 100 kg if I never see wrongly.

Nice to see you itching to come back joopsg. ADA Vitamix with Dennerle S7, wow, that sounds like a deadly combo.

Nowadays I see I.Adoketa very frequently in LFS, maybe the overseas breeders has been mass breeding them. C328 was selling them for $95 a juvenile adult pair. Maybe can order from c328's uncle. If not JZX has a few juveniles right now, in particular, one which is very nicely coloured up.

I bought them as Ap. Barlowi but i do have doubts about them. Im suspecting mine might not be barlowi? Somehow, the female doesnt really look like a barlowi female to me. They are definitely a pair though, as they had fries before.
