Breaking news on The Straits Times:
There is a saying: China consume half of the world's supply in salmon.RIO DE JANEIRO - THE current global fiancial crisis is 'nothing' compared to the impact of climate change, Britain's Prince Charles warned Thursday as he called for urgent environmental protection measures.
'We are, I fear, at a defining moment in the world's history,' he told a meeting of Brazilian business leaders and officials in Rio de Janeiro half-way through a Latin America tour.
'The global recession is far worse than any seen for generations,' he said, adding that growing demand for energy and food created the potential for 'political uncertainty in every continent.' But more menacing, he said, was that 'the threat of catastrophic climate change calls into question humanity's continued survival on the planet.'
He stressed: 'Any difficulties which the world faces today will be as nothing compared to the full effects which global warming will have on the world-wide economy.' The speech was billed as a key presentation in the prince's commitment to environmental conservation.
Prince Charles, 60, and Camilla, 61, were on a 10-day, three-nation tour taking in Chile, Brazil and Ecuador's Galapagos Islands - the research inspiration for Charles Darwin's theory of evolution - meant to draw attention to the challenges posed by climate change.
The prince, heir to Britain's throne, praised Brazil for the measures it has implemented to protect the Amazon, and described them as part of a new approach that dovetailed into the search for solutions to the world's economic and financial crisis.
That model relied on governments bringing in private investors through carbon credits and other schemes to promote eco-protection - to 'leverage' private capital for the cause of conservation.
The prince outlined his ideas in a discussion with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Wednesday, and on Monday with Chilean President Michelle Bachelet.
After his speech, the prince left to visit a social program set up by a British-run group in one of Rio's notorious slums that seeks to channel street violence into body combat sports. -- AFP![]()

I wonder why there's such a panic about global climate change. Paleoclimatology shows much worse levels of co2 in the earths history, higher average temperatures, etc. compared to what exists today. As we observe in our aquariums, more co2 = more plant life. If one nutrient is deficient, a plant that doesn't need it takes over. If another nutrient is too strong, yet another form of life comes forward to take advantage of it.

I believe it is not the plants we are worried about, but the change in weather patterns. Weather is a complex system and according to the chaos theory, a small change in 1 aspect of the climate changes the events in the future by vast amounts. An example I could think of is that the rise in global temperature increases the rate of evaporation of the ocean's water, resulting in tropical storms becoming more frequent and stronger around the world. I would rather not have one ripping my home into shreds.
I also vaguely remember something about how global warming will trigger a chain of events which will eventually lead to the next ice age. Then again I may have remembered wrongly.![]()
Oh I agree, there will be another ice age. I just don't understand why we're blaming our selves or trying to delay it.
As far as I understand the issue, the earths atmospheric CO2 raises after the temperature increases. The temperature, from what I know, is effected by solar flares and other radiation from the sun effecting the radiation blocking upper layers of earths atmosphere. As it is, I understand that while the earths surface temperature is rising, the temperature higher up has not. This seems to be in contradiction with the principles of the greenhouse effect. I'm of the opinion that the temperature increase will dislodge the massive chunks of frozen methane deep in the earths oceans, causing a massive green house effect in our not so distant future.
If it is inevitable that the earth will hit an ice age, I wonder why we try to alter the earth to prevent it. When I observe the efforts of humans to alter nature to improve it, I've often observed the outcomes to be mixed. Most of the failures seem to be based on an admitted lack of understanding. On the other hand, I have seen adaptation for tolerance to adversity prevail in life throughout the planet.

*edit* Ironic side note: 50 years ago it was popular in North American culture to be worried about a global ice age based on similar principles that we are discussing now. Some thought co2 emission from humans might help to prevent it, and save us all from freezing to death. I'm sure humanity doesn't know what it's talking about most of the time, but it sure is fun bouncing the ideas back and forth.
