In fact he does not even have a filter system for some of his shrimps, which is amazing. And his shrimp tank are soooo small!! Keeping the shrimps alive in such a small water volume is an ART on its own.
    ....
Newbies should use bigger tanks when possible, 3 feet and up....2 feet minimum. The bigger body of water will help stabalise the tank, avoid PH/KH/GH fluctuations, which will lead to happier and healthier shrimps.
    ....
P.S. When you are at his shop, take time to admire his planted tank...some nice shrimps in there too
hahaha.. i did drop by aquatic connection (it is at block 53) today as i was in the area. and whenever i do, i like to admire his set ups. they are simple and nice. and he did a revamp of his big main tank i think about 2 weeks ago. dessertwine, perhaps you can get some inspirations from there!

well, some of his small set ups do not have a filter system. i noticed that in those set ups, he uses mainly cherries (or shrimps from the cherry family) which is pretty hardy. it can be done, although not advisable as shrimps do need clean water. my cherries are also kept in a small tank without a filter system... hehe... and they are breeding too till i can't manage to count them . once, i saw a 5 inch set up at his shop with 2 cherries in it. but i wouldn't do it lar....

yup, we are always advised to start with a larger tank as the water parameter would be more stable. but small set ups are also possible if you know how to handle them.

I am serious...have been based in KL for the last 5 years. Only started keeping tank in Jan 2008. Joined this forum in Dec 2008....have been more active in Malaysia Aquascaping Club [my-mac.net]. Yet to meet a serious female shrimper in Mac/Aq...

Aunt Adelyn has 2 tanks in her house, but she is no serious shrimper LOL, and doesn't allow her husband to disturb her tank. Her cherries are breeding well, now she is trying to breed CRS.

As for signatures, i seldom read them, maybe I glance....all the time I assume forumers are male :P..

My house have almost 10 tanks in the main living room.....so you can imagine whats it like...messy, like a jungle of tanks.

ok, I'll post picture of the tank before I pour water for further advice.

Later i'll be heading down to the lfs in the evening to take a look at the things I need to buy. Need to set aside a budget first before my hubby start grumbling at me again... ha ha
There are small under gravel filters.
They do not take too much extra space.
However, they are not a necessity, many breeders don't use undergravel flter system.
It is just something nice to have, in my case, extra precaution scared die [kia-si] syndrome. LOL

Hi beetroot, I was there yesterday around 5pm. I was amazed that some of his tanks doesn't have air pump or filter system too. But he mentioned they still survived. The green shrimps even managed to breed! I saw a couple of shrimplets in the tank, so cute!

Yes, actually I eyed one of his tank setup already! Very nice! He sells a variety of shrimps too.

    hey, don't stereotype! ha ha

i would love to see your tanks. it'll be so fascinating!

yes, I would like to start from simple first since I know crs are much harder to keep. once my cherrys are ok, I'll try to handle crs and who knows, maybe my living room will be looking like a jungle one day too!! ha ha...

Haha its good to know there are other women shrimp fans as well

Using matured water imo doesn't require a filter as long as the bioload is low. But if you're intending to breed them then a filter is a must.

I personally prefer the sponge filter for various reasons including the fact that it introduces a lot of O2 into the water which shrimps like. Cheap and good. Not the look you want if you're into planted I suppose An alternative would be to use an airpump with undergravel filtration

Ya. Brightsp@rky is a lady. Our fellow forumers often address hey bro even my signature says mother

The trick to win your wife's or galfriend's heart to this hobby is to buy her something with the money from any shrimp sale. And let her know that.

    Haha

They are normally ok until you start up that 10th tank and ....spending more time doing wc than watching tv and dinner dates always includes a quick visit to a LFS.

When you have a partner also into fish keeping, it can be the opposite. Visits to the LFS are an excuse for a dinner date (at least when you have to drive 30 mins to get there, and there's conveniently a good sushi place nearby)
Perhaps getting an uninterested partner a small tank of their own to play with would perk up their interest a little.
