Hi, substrate shouldn't be an issue as these two plants dont have roots, or rather, they take in fert via the leaves, so for fert it'll be liquid i guess..
So unless it's gonna be a strictly riccia xmas moss tank, no need for base fert..if you so happen to decide to add (insert stem plant name) in your aquascape in the future, you can add fert balls next to the plant.
I've never tried xmas moss, but from what I have read, temp is crucial(?) for accelerated growth at 24~26 deg c. From what i can think, the high wattage as simon has mentioned will cause the temp to go up, and a fan might be needed..for the desired "ideal" temp...
Hope this helps!

I wouldn't want to do this 2 plants together in the tank.... Riccia that gets stuck in the moss is almost impossible to isolate. Riccia requires higher lighting but moss preferlower lighting. I find Xmas moss dun do well in highly litted areas..... unless you can balance up these conditions.. I would say by all means.
good point sherwin...
Riccia tends to float up, and the floating leaves can easily get tangled in the moss... this not only means you will have to clean floating riccia leaves, but may also have to free leaves trapped by the moss...

And one more point. Riccia may turn into the sinking form and become dark green colour. Will be hard to differentiate and separate from X'mas moss.

Juggler's tanks
Why not consider other slower growing and low lights plants to go together with the moss? Riccia and moss, as mentioned by the others, dun go very well together.

agree w juggler... i m having this problem now... and u know.. the dark green riccia just can't stop growing... its basically everywhere in surprising amount when u pull them out.
