    hey guys

i got a virarium housing 5 crabs, half water half land, with gravel and sand mix substrate. no plants.
i got a small pump at the back which is an airpump and barely a filter which causes abit of disturbance, although it doesnt totally get to most parts of the water.

its covered, but lately ive been finding quite a number of mosquito larvae around in the water. i'll be taking the crabs out, filling the tank up with water and putting some fish in to clear it up, then do a total scrub down and all that. but anyone has any idea on how to stop mosquitos from breeding in there once ive cleared the current ones out?

    here is the setup

oh yes, and i forgot to mention as well. i cant put any fish in cos the crabs will kill them, and anyway there isnt enough water unless i put in a wall to push the gravel over to 1 side.

i also dont want, if possible, too much current or disturbance in the water cos then the gravel and sand will start eroding and mess up the water-dryland setup. carnivorous plants are impossible cos the crabs eat anything i throw in which includes plants

try raising the water level to twice the height. and at the same time, proportionately raise the substrate level so that you get the same consistent dry land. with a higher water level you can buy an internal filter strong enough to push the current. can buy a mini pump to push dirt along the bottom of the substrate or push dirt from areas the internal filter cannot access.

This is a very good suggestion as these crabs, or rainbow crabs to be more exact, poo alot. Having an internal filter would not only solve your mosquito problem, but also remove some of the waste. However take note of the power cord extention, as these crabs are fantastic escape artists, and would take advantage of any possible escape routes.

    Happy crab keeping!
    Cheers,
