Hi bros, I am planning to set up a 1ft cube nano asian setup. Was thinking of having only some twigs and plants made of crypts predominantly.. Crypt parva, wendtii and a rounded-edged crypt I have yet to ID..

I need recommendations for substrate, fert(if needed occassionally) and does the typical clip-on PL lighting enough? Planning to have boraras brigittae in it

Hi Fauzy, when i see your title "asian stream", what come to my mind, is that your setup tank will be long one....

Have you though of using those rectangle tank, i think their height is less than 1ft.

If you plan to setup to keep boraras brigittae, try ada soil i think it help to bring out the color. but it not a must.

Personally i will not go for C. parva, it does not create the hiding place for them. Are you adding any filter to it?

Hmm... micro rasboras need places to hide? what if they are the only fishes in the tank with shrimps?

Does this hold for urop (don't remember the spelling)?

Thinking of revamping my 2ft. Thanks

2ft setup for Boraras urophthalmoides, you will need alot of them.

It always good to provide them some plant to swim...it make them feel safe.

Haha.. I expected such responses! Let's just think of it as an itsy-bitsy part of a stream dug out and dumped into a 1 ft cube. I wanted to have crypts planted randomly and moss "dumped" around. Boraras would be my only fauna. A hang-on filter will be used. Lighting-wise how bros? If ADA soil, which one? Amazonia II? Powder or granules?

Haha.. Ok.. Any Gex soil will work? Red or green? How about filtration? Hang-on filter or Eden 501? I saw bro Juggler's tank in the low-tech sticky thread. He mentioned about dosing with small amounts of traces. What fert routine shall I use for mine if plants are crypts and moss? Do I need base fert? Sorry for asking too many questions!

crypts in nature tend to form clumps as they propagate outwards. suggest you plant them on one side or in the centre of the tank.

fish wise I suggest two species for contrast, one small and one midsize. the harlequin rasbora Trigonostigma heteromorpha is commonly associated with vegetated forest streams. I suggest a small school of T. heteromoraph along with a larger school of Boraras maculatus (prefered from my purist perspective) or B. brigittae (since they look reasonably similar).
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

Re: Want to make a nano asian stream

Hey everyone. I decided to forgo the idea of having crypts in my tank. So this is what I have now.

    Plants:
    -E.Tenellus(I think)
    -Java moss
    -Java Fern 'Narrow Leaves'

    Fauna:
    -8x Boraras Brigittae
    -3x Grade C CRS
    -1x Endler

Substrate: GEX Shrimp & Plants soil(Red packet) covered with fine pea gravel(lapis?)

Wondergro Root tabs are placed underneath the E. Tenellus. I dosed 1ml of Micro and Macro respectively

    Lighting: 9W PL tube(Photoperiod: 6hours)

I need comments regarding the dosing part as I have no idea about this and since this is a low tech tank without CO2 injection, should I dose Seachem excel as a source of Carbon? Thanks!

Maybe a 11w lights will make the e.tennellus grow low and carpet faster.

22W? Will it stimulate any algae growth? Hmm.. Should not have exchanged my double tube for a single tube PL set!

haha..if you're intending to keep it lowtech, 11w will do. If not you will have a tough time clearing up the e.tennellus...been there and done that

I think 22W is not a lot. Can grow HG, spiky moss[slowly]. Don't even need CO2. Just a few drops of excel, NPK and trace now and then.
