hi all, have gotten two 2ft tank set, and intend to set up both for apisto breeding....base would be ada soil, with 2-3 cave in each tank, plants would be java ferns, windelov, some moss tie to wood and some nana and driftwood....intend to have lots of hiding space

would like to ask if it is a good idea to get 6 apisto, 2female 1 male in each tank, or just one pair in each tank is enough? and for the options above, would i be able to breed and leave the male in the tank till the fries are quite big? or do i have to take out any of the parent or both, or i take out the fries to another tank? problem is i only got 2 x 2ft tank, maybe can squeeze out another 1ft cube tank... can anyone advise me on wat i should do? go with 2 pair only? 1 pair? or 6 apisto with 4female 2male?

    Re: Apisto question

I will prefer to get trio,1 male and 2 female.
As for the breeding process can check some of the recent thread for more information.

    Re: Apisto question

For me i like a pair in a breeding tank instead of a trio because the non breeding female will be terrorized when a breeding pair is formed. I would suggest you get 2 pairs of the same species if your intention is to breed them. This way, you have a backup incase anyone of them dies and also for cross breeding purposes to maintain a good line of F1s.

You have many options with raising fries
    1) Leave the parents with the fries
    2) Remove the male only
    3) Remove the fries

    I prefer option 2 and 3.

    Re: Apisto question

It is because option 1 will stress both parents as the male will eat up the fries to spawn again and vice versa.
Option 2 allow the female to take care of the fries without any stress.
Option 3 is useful when the pair or female is inexperience.

Hi i wld prefer just a pair for each tank, if 2 female 1 male most likely the "extra" female will be terrorise to death.

For breeding questions i personally wld prefer to let nature take it course first.
U can try to let the pair take care of the fries first. But if the female keep whacking the male violently until the male swim up n down, take out the male immediately. In some cases the male might eat the fries too, take out e male in this case too. if nothing happens just leave them be with minimal disturbance, try not to stare at them too often.

I would not want to take out the female as the female will not be able to learn how to take care the fries, so far in my own experience the female alway tends to be a very protective n caring mother and from what i have read chances of the fries surviving is quite small if the fries are separated from their mother at early stages though i have not tried before.

but do not be discourage if the first few spawn fails as it is alway the case, once they spawns, they can't stop so don't worry!
