Presently using 3ft sump tank to run filteration for my 5ft tank but thinking of changing to cannister , which is better ?

For ease of maintenance and larger media space, definitely better than canister.

Ya, I agree with bossteck, sump is much more easier for maintenance and since your tank is 5ft, definitely you'll need a larger media space for certain amount of medias in order to achieve an optimum water quality. Anyway, for 5ft, i believe you'll need 2 units of powerful canister.
