do not use ammonium, it will cause algae as well as toxic to fauna. You can try Ca(NO3)2.4H2O
Hello everyone,
I used to dose potassium nitrate crystals in my planted tank to supply nitrogen to my plants.
Potassium nitrate can be used to make bombs. Right now, I cannot buy potassium nitrate anymore because police only gives permit to very selected people (hydroponics farmers , researchers , etc) to buy it. Planted tank aquarists cannot buy it anymore.
So what other sources of nitrogen can I use for my planted tank?
Can I use solid ammonium salts? But I read some where that ammonium is toxic to fish.
I do not want to buy liquid mixtures that contain nitrates because I would have to buy a lot of it as I have a large aquarium with many fast growing stem plants. Moreover, the liquid fertilisers take up alot of space.
Many thanks for any suggestions.

I sympathize with your situation as I run a big tank too. I will not mind if I need to apply permit with the police.
