    starting a 3ft CRS planted Steup .....

hi lookin for infor from pros on CRS keeping

    Setup
    1) 3ft X 1.5ft X 1.5ft
    2) Eheim Pro 2 2026 wif Under Gravel Filtration
    3) Gex Shrimp mix with Normal Green Gex 2 Pack ( should just use Gex Shrimp only )
    4) Topped off with Black Quartz Sand
    5) Resun CL 450 ( 25 degress , still sizing a suitable pump )
    6) Lighting 4X 36WPL or 4X T5HO
    7) Considering Low tech ( use Seachem Excel Dosing only )
    Seachem Prime for water conditioning

    some questions i haf
    1) Mixing the Gex any issues ? or jus use Pure Gex Shrimp
    2) Seachem Excel safe for CRS ?
    3) Using a bucket of Gex Shrimp Soil for water changes, is zi good ?

A full planted tank is quite a challenge together with CRS. You cannot anyhow rearrange stuff in the tank or you will encounter casualties.

The only problem I see with mixing of gex is the grain size. If you are okay with that then there should not be a problem.

Excel has to be dosed carefully.. Otherwise it will definitely affect the CRS.

    Still learning.....

I suppose you have to be very patient and tolerant. The easiest way I can think of is to have the tank fully established with plants before introducing the shrimp. The only problem is if you encounter any algae problems you will have to find natural ways of combating it. Chemicals are very dangerous for shrimp.

Also as time goes by your plants will most probably need ferts. Then your problem starts, you cannot dig the soil up and insert ferts as it might cause ammonia spikes. Also if you intend to dose liquid ferts you need to find those without any copper in them. I suppose that is why most people use moss.

I have some stem plants in my CRS tank and over time they have been covered in algae. The only way I get rid of it is to trim. Hair algae also can be a problem.

I'm not sure about gex soil. Cause mine lose the acidity after about a year plus. Ph goes neutral. I now had supplement with co2 to bring the ph to 6.6. Maybe others here can share their experience with gex soil. I intend to change the soil to africana but still figuring what the best way to locate all my crs.

Dosing excel? Very risky. Wrong amount can easily wipe out all your crs.
Everything should be made as simple as possible...but not one bit simpler.

dosing CO2 very risky also IMHO, Problem which might arise
    1. CO2 solenoid spoil ? cases are rare but then again its the CRS's lives we're
      talkin about
    2. CO2 tank empty ? tank level nid to monitor often.

If Soil lose ph lowering effect then its possible to put in a small tub of "New" PH reducing
    soil.
