hi anyone would help me wit the setup of 2 tier 2 ft planted tanks running on 1 chiller and cannister ..

    pls kindly advise ..

    Top tank
    outlet from the chiller
Overflow pipes to the bottom tank

    bottom tank
    Inlet to the cannister

    Cannister : outlet to chiller

    Specification :
    cannister : 800/litres hr
    chiller : cl280

I am still wondering .. does overflow counts as an filtration ? can my equipments able to support the tanks requirement ?

    How can i improvise ?

    thanks in advancement ..

Re: 2 tier tanks set up , advise needed ?

a few points I can think of:
    1) I'm using a CL280 to chill my 2 feet tank...... your 2 tanks are equivalent to 4 feet tank...may be a little underpowered. I expect alot of "heat gained" from the 2 tank setup.

    2) your cannister is underpowered as well especially with your kind of split setup

    3) your water flow is going to be a big problem, especially for the lower tank as there is no way to properly direct your water inlet from the overflow.

    4) your CO2 (i asssume u are going high tech) usage will be massive from the overflow.

    5) overflow in this case is not a filtration as there is no media being passed through. your cannister is the only filtration.

    thanks for your advise ..

I have space restrained .. currently having a 2 ft tank, trying to fully utilised the space. i wish to have 4ft tank too..

So is best to have 1 cannister to each tank for filtration right?
If i get a better chiller , can i still support 2 tanks using same chiller ?

u were saying usuage of co2 from overflow , does it mean that co2 will flow down with the water and overdosing the bottom tank ?

Is there any solution for 2 tanks with 1 cannister and chiller ?

A chiller (as far as I know) only have one inlet and one outlet. So these is no way it can support 2 tanks unless they share the same circulation (ie, either running in series as what you proposed above or in parrallel when you join the 2 outlet from the 2 filter cannister to the chiller and split the return to the 2 tanks....possible but a headache to control the exact amount to return to each tank as any imbalance between the intake and output will just mean one empty tank and one overflowed tank)

I meant that the co2 lost from the overflow system will be alot and you have to inject alot more to compensate. [assumption: you are using chiller so I assume you are going high tech planted? If high tech planted, usually means CO2 injection and high lights]

suddenly a solution came to me..but with your space constraint, it may not be feasible.

the 2 tanks have to overflow to a single sump and you draw the water from the sump into the chiller and return the water to the sump or both tanks.
