nice ... is that acros in one of the pics ??? Or SPS .... what kinda of lights do you have ???

  5. #25
Yes, got 6 acros and 2 porites now, hoping to get more! Using Iwasaki 6500K 150W, seems to be doing good for many of the corals after I changed the lights. Too bad it's a little yellow.

    Hi DragonGoby

Beautiful tank! How wud yu advise wud be mariners on the basics to buy for marine tanks? (lights,skimmer..)

Will the metal stuff corrode easily in the house?

Finally, how often do yu water change and using ready salt water or dissolved salt water?

    Thanks in advance..

btw ... think your tank is only 3 ft right ??

also .... 6500 lights will do fine for the SPS ? Don't think they will really coloured up .... right ???

btw , you the same dragongoby as that in SRC ???

  8. #28
It's 4' x 2' x 2.5', that's why it looks like a 3' configuration. All the SPS are placed in the top 1/3 of the water column at least. You're right, 6500K Sakis will not colour them up, but by far offer the best PAR. Thinking of getting a set of Radiums or 20KK Sakis to see if it helps. Yah, same guy - how many people have this nick?

BTW, is SRC server down again? couldn't access yesterday and today!

    Hong Yee,

150Ws might not be good enough considering the depth of your reef....
And for Acros to colour up, think you might need at least a 250W even when the acros are placed up the 1/3 part of the tank......

    Hi Phang,

    SRC revamping ... =P

Yah, agree with u - I think i told u guys at SRC that I was bent on getting 250W, but Bernard at Eye started telling me about the UV issues regarding the 250W Sakis so I got the 150s instead. Should have known better. =( And talked to AT, he was telling me the Radiums give out even more UV. Alamak. But anyway next month I'll change to 250W, cos the Acros are starting to increase in numbers. Just got a blue tip, the colour may probably fade away to brown under the 150s so I'll get those 250Ws asap.

So how are your lights? Think you mentioned u were trying to keep everything under 800W - any luck so far?

Still considering whether to replace Radiums with Ushios...
or like you, go for a total Saki Setup (3x 250w)....

But would need quite substantial actinics to balance it out....
Was wondering how the T5s 22kk bulbs would help out...
If they are credited as able to churn out more lumens per watt compared to MHs, maybe 4 x 4 ft tubes should help balance it out....

    Hello!

In quite a good mood now, heh, cos the blue tip acro is finally settling in and opening its polyps. 3 x 250W Sakis? Yah, think it'll be very yellow, maybe the T5s can help - good substitute for those elusive VHO lamps. Any idea what is the bulb life? Also, have you considered supplementing with MH from, say. CoraLife 20KKs? Good luck with your lighting!

One question - has anyone tried using ReefTecs here?

    Regards,
    HY

    Wahhahahah....

look at the new configuration that I might be interested in ....

    3 x 250W 6500k Saki...
    additional of 3 x 150W 20kk Saki...

one set of 250 and 150 under one large Parabolic Reflector.... parallel to tank front...

The 250W Sakis will come on for main 8 hrs photo period and the 20kks will come on for only 2-4 hrs... when I'm home.....

Only question.... can the light from the 20kk offset the yellow...... heh heh heh....[]

BTW, many reefers don't recommend the reeftecs as the main shaft's made of stainless steel... and in the long run would give lost of problems... reviews so far have not been good...
Recommend the Tunze... alittle expensive but excellent performance and efficiency...
eg 6080.... churning out nearly 8000 litres for a mere 19 watts.... now that's a good buy ..... or maybe a 6110... 12000 l under 45 watts with a controller that could give you variable flowrate...

    Hi Phang,

Will a single Saki 20kk sufficient for a marine setup of 3x1.5x2ft?
I am interested in keeping SPS.
    Thanks.

    CK,

If the 2 ft refers to the height of your reef, then a 20kk 150W would not be enough esp for the colours to turn out well...

one MH is recommended for a 2sq foot area... as they are point source lighting..

think a 250W would be good if you utilise parabolic reflectors though...

BTW, lighting is not the only important feature if you wanna keep SPS.... there are lots more of factors before SPS keeping becomes possible.....

  17. #37
Heheh, listen to Phang the SPS-Mad Reefer! Good mood eh? Laugh so much! hahahaha ...

Your lighting sounds good! But that'll make a total of like, 1200W?!? Gosh, I'd hate to receive that P*B bill! Saki 20KK, IMHO, looks very blue in the display showroom at Eye without water, but once it hits water I suspect the effect will be whitish with a tinge of blue, rather than being predominantly blue, won't it? Perhaps not enough to offset the yellowness. BTW, Phang, could you kindly PM me or post a contact of where I could get a parabolic reflector done? Or how to DIY one, for that matter. Just buy a piece of polished aluminium and bend it into a U-shape and drill holes? Sounds funny ..

How much are the Tunze going for? I'm looking at Wave2K, but dang ... my tank's got Euro Bracing. Henry says that it has an adapter bracket for EBs, but that'll mean I have to place the Wave2K on the posterior wall of the tank - which again can't be done since my tank's backed up against a wall and the external motor's rather large. Maybe I'll skip the Tunze/Wave2k/Reeftecs for now, and concentrate on my lighting first. Going to use powerheads to do the job for the moment! [:0]

    Hong Yee,

I'm actually pretty keen on the Tunze 6080. An alternative would be the 6110 (12000 l with a controller for variable).

As for the reflectors, get a standard 4 footer flourescent reflector, bend and join them...... heh heh.....

hmmmmm....maybe jus stick to my 2 x 400, 1 x 250 configuration.... (drop in the 150W 20kk saki for some balancing of the 6500 saki.... if it looks good, then configure all the 400s into 250/150 combo....

And yes, Iwasakis do come in 50kk DE/SE bulbs.... but IMO, too blue for any good, would very much still prefer high PAR...

Went to check out the Tunze website, seems like the 6110 with the controller is good! Still, price is on the high side - I reckon it'll amount to no less than $400 for the unit?

Just got a new Pocillipora and a blue sponge, will post pics shortly after they settle in. Anyone knows if blue sponges can be kept for extended periods of time in aquaria? I remember I had a proliferation of sponges last time after adding some supplements, but they grew stringy instead of the columnar growth when I first got them.
