Hello,

What do you used to build terraces in your planted tank?

I have seen some lfs usind a plastic strips. What's your experience in building the terrace partition? Do you silicon them (plastic, slates or rocks) to the tank...

Dennerle has this 'L' shape ceramic. Anyone know where to buy it.

I'm not sure my way is the best, but i got those stainless steel wire mesh, cut to the dimension i wan & bend them to get any shape i wan. So far it's working fine.

Hi james, i do prefer natural look for a terrace.. especially using driftwood, corkbark.. and yes, better to silicone it down so it's secure and will be able to hold back the gravel..

have seen terrace made of arylic, glass, slate, mangrove root, corkbark.. one thing i notice is the material u use, have to withstand the lateral force of the higher grd.. seen ppl sprinkle gravel over arylic to make it look natural

I think for this, you can use imagination and some experimentation. You have to decide if its going to be decorative or just utilitarian (i.e. it'll be concealed by other elements of your aquascape)

The reason you would want to use a non-porus material like plastic strips is if you want to terrace your substrate fert too. I find that if the terraced fert is above the lower layer of gravel, you might find it leaching into your water if there are gaps between the partioning material(eg. rocks). This will happen even if you put gravel between fert and partition.

The best idea I think is to use plastic strips/panels etc to build the terrace. Decorate it by placing/glueing driftwood/rockwork/gravel/etc in front of/on it. Any gaps between the partition and the decoration can be filled with gravel.

Here's what I did. It's a huge driftwood that refused to sink completely, so I ended up using it for terracing. Because its one complete piece, and it's self supporting forward leaning shape, it is able to hold the terrace without being siliconed in place. I did not use any other partition.

I ever did teracing using perspex strips silicon with gravel. Looks nice from a distant but damn fake at close up.
Having said that, I would suggest using natural means like wood, corkbark or stones. It looks natural and nicer....

Hi James,

- There are a couple of ways in building the Terraces, bascially the 'Natural or the artificial way.

- For my tank, I employed both methods.
1) For the Natural way of partitioning, I used thin clear perspex (can be bought in Bras Brasah), cut into strips of Length and Height you want, and start your partitioning from there. I insert the perspex before pouring in the sand.

2) For the artificial way, which I also find it appealing, is to buy those 'Brick' partition from Lor Harus (Ah Pek Fish Farm).

I find Terraces important in Aqua Landscaping because it will bring out the structure, depth and design in landscaping in a tank. Therefore, have to plan carefully what you actually want in your tank.

i had try using the black colour styroform as terraces before, but they keep floating up leh. No way to keep it down.

Sorry guys, dun have a pic of that tank on hand cos no camara.
But, mine doesn't float up maybe becos I place them during the intial setup together with the gravels.
I inserted it down touching the base of the tank.
