Can't really tell from the pics. But from your description and since you used to have it in the canister, it could be zeolite (ammonia rock), like what your friend said.
I have got this little rocks in my canister last time... cleaning up my cupboard and found this.....
From what I know from a friend, its a ammonia rock...
But I not too sure whether if it is 1..
Any expert here can help me to ID the little rocks.
Size of it is 0.5 to 1cm each...

but I did a search in the net and zeolites dun really look like this...
think I have got it.
This little rocks should be name as Bio Rio.
and this is what I have found in the web...
