try not to mix them. best is keep one specie for 1 tank.

Re: thinking of starting a small shrimp

You can start with cherry shrimps first.
They are so hardy that hardly anything would kill them and most of all, they are cheaper to start with. My cherries are basically left unattended after since I set up my CRS tank. And yet they are still reproducing like mad.

Rather you have a 1 species tank only. Some may interbreed and the offsprings will not be nice anymore.

Good forums to read up on shrimps would be here and shrimpnow.com

thanks for that feed back. Why are those crystal skrimps so expensive - 10-12 dollars seems beyond belief when compared to a FISH!

try buying a 1.5ft fish tank, cost ard $20 at lfs.enough room for plants as well. 1 ft will be too small if you wish to have a planted tank

Re: thinking of starting a small shrimp

It would be more advisable to start off with cherries first as they are more hardy. Resources are easily available nowadays. A much better situation than the pioneers that started out on shrimping back then

    Happy shrimping bro!

Think long term. When you have successfully created the right environment, these guys will breed crazily and in no time, given a small tank, you may either need to upgrade the tank or sell off your collection.

is it that crystal shrimps are rare, or difficult to breed that they are expensive, or what?

if you are scare of losing expensive crs, you can start with B grades first and see if they survive in ur tank. one you have more knowledge about them then you can buy higher grades.

I started with cherry, but prior to it, I got some tiger and bee when I realised how tough it is to keep them. I think cherry is a good start when you are first into shrimp. Take note of the startup phase since you are going to start up a new tank. Tank Cycling is very important. This forum is a good mine for you to dig out some knowledge.

Slowly, when the setup is comfortable and you are confident, start with a lower grade. This will definitely make economical sense and at the same time you will not lose the joy of shrimp keeping while seeing shrimp dying.

Read more about CRS because they are not really easy to keep due to temperature and water condition.

water condition is more critical and more difficult to achieve than temperature based on my experience.

Re: thinking of starting a small shrimp

I have decided to use lots of rocks/pebbles i got in sabah to make a stream effect. So will only be moss, maybe on bogwood.

I want to get rid of (transfer) my puffer fish from my main tank - but it might look a bit boring with only one puffer and some shrimps. Any suggestion what fish can work with a puffer in this type of setup??

Also any problems if bottom is sand- like in streams??

    Tank 45x30x30cm
    Hag on Ehiem filter 2040
    2x11 watt PLC lights

    Cheers

Best not to add any fish because even though adult shrimp may be safe they shrimplets risk ending up as snacks
