Hi Blk115,
Sure you can use a external canister filter for your 3ft planted tank. Guess the thing you'll have to worry about exposing your tank to direct sunlight is algae bloom or the melting of your plants. Do some reading up on how to control the lights, what sand would be suituable for your scape and how you intend to channel co2 into your tank. ( lots of different choices to pick from ) good luck and keep us updated on how's your scape coming along.![]()
Hi, put the tank on balcony, I think not good ideal, suggest to find some place in house to put your tank. keep us your posting.

I think it is ideal to use external canister filter for a planted tank. Definitely better than OHF as they create ripple that may disturb the CO2 supply. 3ft is a good size. Recommend not to have the plants under direct sunlight, otherwise, you may have green water very soon.
For soil, I would recommend ADA II, because I am using it. Hehe. Very substrate for many plants. As for CO2, it is definitely necessary and the supply in the water or from the surface is never sufficient. U might need to dose some liquid fertiliser along the way. That depends on what kind of plants you want to keep. Whether any demanding one.
hi yup i'll be using a eheim 2026 for my filtration.. soil, can advise wad is good nad roughly how much? wad medias should i put in my canister? is ceramics ring and biohome plus sufficient? coral chips needed?
Alright 2026 is sufficent for a 3ft. Well Soil, there is quite a variety in Singapore, brands like ADA, MagicSoil, Gex Soil, Dennerle Quatz and many others. ADA and Gex are more freuqently used by aquascapers in singapore. The price wise its is $39 for the 9L pack Gex soil so be around there also. But remember to put in base substrate also if you intend to have this tank for long term. Ceramics Ring and Biohome plus is sufficent you might wanna take a look at Bamboo Charcoal can help to prevent the bad odour from your tank. Coral Chips havent tried them before so I cant comment on it. Anyway, reconsidering on the location of your tank because you will be very disencourage upon looking at your tank with full of Algae. Direct sun isnt good for some reasons also.
Cheers,

If you are going for ADA soil for a 3ft, be prepared to set aside roughly $70 for a good depth on the substrate ( more depth in soil, plants wont get uprooted easily ). Media wise i think its more to personal preference. Im using biohome, bioballs and sponge pad. Think others might recommend you ehiem substrate etc, it depends on your spending power.
Coral chips are not needed unless you can control the amount to add raising your GKH to a sufficient level to maintain the PH level when CO2 is being channelled/ when your water gets too acidic from the usage of ADA soil ( Doesnt happen often ). Its alot of trouble trying to lower your GKH if it gets too high ( water changes will not help lower the GKH ). Of course it depends on the type of fauna or flora you intend to keep.
