Just at the library and came across this book on Feng Shui and Keeping Fish (chinese book).

Personally I'm not really into this stuff but thought it is interesting, so just to share some of the points inside...

    1) Gold breeds Water
Black symbolises Water and number 6 symbolises Gold. So it is good if you have 6 black fishes in the water

    2) Lucky number 9
It is the best if the number of fishes is 9, 19, 29, etc. This is because '9' means 'long' in chinese. Therefore, it means smooth career and fortune will be yours for very long.

    3) Do not put cover
For the aquarium to be effective (in fengshui effects), the aquarium must not be covered. This is so the water can evaporate into the air (forming a natural fengshui cycle).

Just some food for thought, don't be too serious!!

I heard 9 pieces of goldfish, 1 of them must be a black one for safety protection. And most of time, the black one will die first.

I can agree with the 1st and 2nd statement. But, I dont agree on the third statement. Put cover is to prevent any fishes jumping out of the water. I think that this is only meant for fishes that dont jump.

Planted tank usually no cover due to heat generated by the light

This I truly agree with... Once engaged the service of a Feng Shui Master to come our house to have a look & make some suggestions/ changes to improve things. Then told him that I intend to keep a fish tank & asked him for professional advice where would be an ideal place to place it. To my horror , he suggested to place it at a position near my windows in my living room (& the best part is this part of my living room will kena the setting sun everyday...) In my mind I was thinking, wow, looks like I will spend more time getting rid of algae rather than enjoying the hobby... Come to think of it, spent nearly $1k for the services which I purely think is crap!! [But, sigh, my wife is the more superstition kind... so no choice... Imagine the amount paid spent on this hobby will surely improve our (or at least mine) Feng Shui as I'm more happy mah...

As for number of fishes wise, some say 8, some say 9, don't know who to follow also... Most important is ownself happy & make sure don't overload the bioload can already...

In 2009, the most prosperous sector is south east with number 8. To activate it a tank can be placed here.

actually you still can put the tank near the window.. without really getting too much of the algae problem. i think. but it really depends on your situation and the layout of your living room.
i have a tank which is pretty near a window, and gets a couple of hours of direct sunlight (although only on about 1/4 of the tank) in the evenings too. kept the curtains closed before i pasted black oyama on it (since the back of the tank is the part the sun is coming from), and now it seems really dark all the time without aquarium lights. black oyama is amazing.
