Hi i was wondering if i used a 300ml bottle, store it with ice and leave the bottle floating on the surface of the tank, do you think it will help to cool down the water temperature and is this a feasible idea?

    300ml in a 6feet tank?
    Just kidding... I suppose you're talking about a 1 - 2 ft tank?

Yes, it will reduce your water temperature, but it will not keep it at that temperature consistently, meaning it may do more harm than good.

it will cool it down but how are you planning to maintain or control the temperature.

    Bro,

I did the same thing to my old 4ft tank. Ya.. u do save money compare in using a chiller. But the temperature will not be consistent.
I freezed about 4 bottles for the whole day changed. Ended up buying a chiller as the changing need to monitoring the bottles closely.... too tried to do so after sometime. Not forgeting... freeze the bottle cost money too.

Long run .. better get a chiller. ...

a noob question: what is the ideal temperature to maintain in a 1ft tank with a few tetra and guppies, some plants, a low-tech setup?

I believe if you really mean low tech, then natural ambient of about 28 - 30degC should be fine. Mine is doing ok so far.

well tried the silly ideal over the weekend, its abit tiring though because keep having to change the bottles but in the long run, its feasible as long as u have enough frozen bottles to change constantly.

Provided you are 24-7 at home to do the change. Sustainability problem...and of course like what others have mentioned...fluctuations.

you are right brother, on friday night i actually put 6 bottles into the freezer and it just not enough, what i put next was a small block of ice, somehow it did not melt as fast compare to the ones in the bottle. In the end, it an idea not worth doing unless you are home 24/7. Well at least i tries and i know now how it felt .
