Intend to purchase a chiller, but still have some doubts to the config. Hope some expert here can advise.

Can i place the chiller in the tank cabinet? Will it be very hot?

I do have a Eheim 2028. If i connect the chiller in-line with the Eheim 2028, will there be any priming problem? What i am concern is that.....Is there extra hassles when performing water changes, like need to pour some water to the hose before the filter can start, etc.

    Re: Chiller Question

your cabinet should have ventilation holes to let the hot air out. the amount of heat generated depends on the amount of cooling that your tank needs.

the chiller is usually connected to the outlet of the filter. this helps to minimise chiller maintenance as clean water is passed through the coils. so there should not be any additional priming issues.

    Re: Chiller Question

It's good to have ventilation holes in your cabinet.

I have tried with adding 6 X holes of 10cm and the heat generated was so hot that my CO2 tank was heated up.
Worried about the danger, I hv modified the cabinet with a big rectangular hole.

You might want to consider making a bigger hole or putting the chiller outside the cabinet.

    Re: Chiller Question

Every chiller has a minimum and maximum flow rate. The flow rate of your 2028 must fall in between these figures. You need to make compensation to your flow rate if you have other equipment like CO2 reactor, UV filter, etc connected in in-line.

You can minimise priming issues by using taps at strategic points. It also helps to prevent flooding when you are servicing your filter or chiller.

    Re: Chiller Question

It's better to place the chiller outside the cabinet instead of in it. An enclosed area will definitely trap the hot air no matter how many holes you have on the cabinet. Efficiency of the chiller will definitely drop.

    Re: Chiller Question

I am keeping a hailea 300a chiller in my cabinet. In the cabinet, i have air vents and also installed 3 AC fans, which i manually turned on as and when needed.

When the chiller runs, it generates a lot of heat. Thus, i always keep the door of the cabinet open so that heat does not build up too much.

When I have guests, i will close the cabinet doors and turned on the 3 installed fans to remove excess heat. It worked for me.

Do note that if u are keeping the chiller in the cabinet, you have to ensure that all sides of the chiller have to be at least 30-45cm away from the walls of the cabinets.

You should place a chiller in a well ventilated area. The hot air needs to escape. The chiller will last longer, too.

You will connect the outlet of the filter to the input of the chiller and the output of the chiller to the tank. During the startup, prime the filter till you see water goes up almost to the outlet into the tank. It won't take long since the capacity a chiller hold is not great. At least, this is what I perform for my 2026 filter connected to a Teco RA240 chiller. Hope it gives you some ideas.

my cabinet is part of a 8-foot custom-made feature wall that separates my dining and living area. so it's a bigger than off-the-shelf cabinets.

It very much depends on the kick in (start chilling) and kick out (idling) period. Use the kick in period multiply by the wattage the chiller produced and u should be able to get a KWH used in a month. You can use the forum aquarium calculator. Recommend to buy a bigger spec chiller to have a more efficient system.

    Re: Chiller Question

So....am i right to say that the only way to place a chiller is beside the tank and not in the cabinet. Or anyone has a more constructive idea on chiller placement.

My main concern on placing beside the tank is the hot air that generating in my living room. Anyone can comment on this? Or is there any brand of chiller that does not produce so much hot air?

    BTW i am using a 3ft tank.

    Re: Chiller Question

Maybe, you could place the chiller beside your window so that the hot air is vented out of your house.

To reduce the heat generated, it's best u place your chiller at places where there's adequate air flow/circulation. An option is near the window. Alternatively, u can use AC fans instead of chiller for your 3 feet tank. If u r not looking at maintaining water at >= 25 degree celcius, AC fans will probably be adequate.

I think u will feel that your living room is warmer after you install the chiller, regardless of brand.
