planning to merge my guppy/tetra tank with my discus tank, since my resident arowana has vacated the premises. I'll be left with a 2ft tank. any ideas what to keep? cichilds are rather "boring", and luo han's suck...maybe a newt tank? would like to keep mudskipper though.

Most herps carry salmonella in their intestinal tract. It's not a problem if you follow basic hygiene practises. Just wash your hands with soap after you handle them or the tank water, the same thing you would do for other pets. Anyway, you're not suppose to handle newts very often as their skins are sensitive to the acids in the oils on our hands (at least that's what I read).----------------

Other than salmonella, most newts secrete a toxin from their skin as self-defense. So, it is definitely a good idea to wash your hands after handling them.
I do not know of any way to disinfect them. Or that any pet herp keepers do so.
As for keeping newts with fishes... search AQ for newts. I posted a long one about that in 'Japanese Fire-belly Newt'.

The small one tank in my office is using an Eden filter. Someone posted a pic of one recently. Try searching for 'Eden'. The 3.5 foot at home is using a Ehiem 2231.----------------

Cost for small one, errr... can't remember exactly. I'm using:
A 15 inch tank ($20???),
Eden Filter ($17),
Gravel ($5 x 2 ???),
Drift Wood,
A cheap 1 foot tank light ($???),
Anubias, Java Moss, Riccia and the round leaf floating plant (all salvaged form other tanks).
Possibly under $60??? But the newts were $3 a piece I think.
