    Guess the first question will be... what type of plants do you have? I've x'mas moss and java ferns in my office tank. No CO2 addition at all and they seem to be ok.

    Without co2, the plants won't die. However, I ran out of CO2 once and had no time to top up for about 2 weeks. Due to the slowdown in nutrient intake BBA emerged.

    Moral of the story is: You should reduce nutrients (fert) if CO2 is not supplied.
    Cheers!!

    Personally, I cut down the lighting. No problem for up to 1 week.

    Hey! That's what I have been worrying about - vacation!

    When I have to be away for one or two weeks, how can I keep the fish and plants healthy without having to get someone to feed and care for my aquarium?

    So judging from the above posting, can I say that when going for a vacation I should:
    1. stop CO2;
    2. reduce nutrient to avoid algae;
    3. reduce fish food fed by auto-feeding machine to cut down on phosphates;
    3. and reduce light (both intensity and hours)?

    (Don't feel safe to cut off light altogether for 2 weeks. I think the plants will die)

    Robin, are you still fighting algae? I have just got rid of BGA. Can share my experience

    If the tank is in a heathly state, stopping CO2 for a week don't kill plants. During the period without CO2, stop your fertilzation and reduce the photo period, say 4-6 hrs daily.

    While I was away, my CO2 was running normal and I did a mega dose of everything before I left. Lights on timer. Fishes, I got someone to feed only twice for that week. No problems.

    But do remember to increase the dosage slowly after u are back fr your holiday.

    Once was away for nearby 2 mths and upon return, do the usual water change etc etc and dose the same amount of fert and............ you can see some hair and green spot aglae. Now If I'm away for 2 or more week, I reduce the dosage by half after water change and increase the dosage slowly over 1 week.
