    Hi all,

Read the Bolivia Ram are peace loving and thinking of making them an addition to my 2ft community tank. Before doing so, guess I better consult the experts here first! So would be grateful if you can help me!

    1) Are they compatible with Platy, Corydoras, Tetra?

    2) Can I keep them single? Or must i keep a pair minimum?

    3) Where can I find them (for sale) in Singapore?

    Thanks in advance!

They will be compatible with all of the fish you mention. It is fine to keep a single specimen. I can not help with purchase info.

    For more info see http://www.dwarfcichlid.com/Microgeo...ltispinosa.php

Bolivian rams are great community fish and you will enjoy keeping them.

They are quite common and can be found at LFSes like Y618 or c328. I think Y618 has a batch in recently but can't confirm. You can also find them at other LFSes too. Try starting a sighting request thread in the aquatalk portion of the forum.

Just look at breeding tube just in front of the anal fin.
The male one will have a pointed tip and female rounded one.

They will squabble with each other but no harm will be inflicted.

Thanks Henry! But I am still not really sure, so if you could look at these photos and advise me, it will be great!

They are peaceful fishes and although bigger than my platies, rummy nose & cories, they doesn't bother them at all.

However, this morning, I noticed now that the one of the bolivian ram (1st thumbnail) starts getting territorial, and kept chasing the other ram!! The 2nd bolivian ram now is being consigned to behind 1 of my rockscape/java fern area.

Is this normal? Or is it because i'm having 2 male rams? If that is the case, do I need to remove 1 of them?

Would appreciate any advice please. Thanks in advance!

Re: Bolivia Ram - Where to buy & other questions

    Well, seems like a pair.
The more vibrant one is the male. he will also have extended caudal.
Do provide a flat surface for them to spawn.
    They are open spawner.
Squabble and chasing are common as long the fish is not injured.
Common especially when the male is ready and female is not.
once they are ready, they will spawn like rabbit.

Flat surface such as slates or pebbles.
If you want to open them, provide live feed like brine shrimp, bloodworm.

Thank you Henry! They are now back to 'normal', and sticking together again.

Hopefully will see them spawning soon!

Re: Bolivia Ram - Where to buy & other questions

Last weekend I bought this fish and put them together with my African cichlids. Unfortunately, both were "eaten" within a day in the tank.
What would be their best tank mates? Is it ok to put them together with guppy as I observed thAt they don't swim fast.

Looking at buying a pair too but quite confused by the LFS names for these Rams. I can tell the Ballon Rams from the rest but can't tell between German / Holland / Bolivian.

Read somewhere that the difference in names is just from the countries they were imported from but I believe most of these are bred locally anyway.

Petmart had some and labelled them German Rams although they looked more Balloon ram to me

Still looking for a nice pair...

Re: Bolivia Ram - Where to buy & other questions

You can't really make a mistake when buying Bolivian rams and the normal rams. Bolivian ram colors are more subdued, their faces are more pronouncedly extended and they grow much bigger than german/local rams.
However, they are rather peaceful creatures as far as cichlids go. Haven't seen them kill anything before.

Those labelled German/ Holland rams are Mikrogeophagus ramirezi while balloon rams are normally balloon versions of this species too.
Bolivian ram is Mikrogeophagus altispinosus, another species althogether, whith very different colouration.
