    Hi all,

Been reading lots about apistos, and recently bought some pairs to try breeding. However I noticed that when I keep the species pair together in a 1x1x1(2 feet tank partitioned into two) the male is very aggressive to the female. Any advice on how to get them into the mood instead of killing each other?

    Thanks!

    Sam

    Re: Apistos

Add dither fish such as a small school of tetras or boraras. I've never had a problem with a pair in a 1ft cube, unless the "female" is a sneaker male

Add more hiding places. My tanks are 0.75ft.

    Ferns, pots, coconut husks etc.

    Re: Apistos

yup. Hiding place for the female is the key to success. I like to use those small ceramic pots and invert them upside down so that the hole is small and yet big enough for the female to dart into in times of aggression.

    Re: Apistos

Thanks guys for the kind tips.

I have added in some hiding places and tankmates to cool off the males' anger in their respective spaces. Hope to see some action soon

Here are some pics of my infant setup purely for this apisto pair to share:

    Re: Apistos

Hi sam, finally got your pair of apisto? Nice nice...
I would suggest that you remove the female first if the male keep attacking her in case any casualty.
Because your male looks very big and strong...

Hi bro, this pair should be Vejita. Where you bought it?

I suspect bacterial infection. Do frequent water changes to keep the water clean.

bro i think it might have gone blind it doesn't react to light on the affected side. but now the eye is no longer covered by a white film... just black with a white shade in the middle.

    I named it T800.

    Re: Apistos

soltari007, 1x1x1(2 feet tank partitioned into two) may be abit tight. the female will come out worse off if the male is in the mood to mate while the female is not...thereby killing it, stress her till death, she jump to her death and etc.

Dither fish may help little bit. Importantly, space and break line of sight. Btw, 328 has got some 3-line pencil fish. The Americans like to use them as dither.

    Re: Apistos

thanks for the tip bro. my partitioned tanks now so far so good, but i'm thinking of putting them in individual Gex L tanks. That should be bigger than the current 1x1x1 by a bit. It is already quite heavily planted and there has been no further nipped fins, so far so good

    Re: Apistos

I agree. Pencilfishes make good dither fish as their mouth's are relatively small. Also they do not work together like tetras to pick off the fry. A small tank may be possible if the partition is transparent and there is another pair in the next tank so that some of the aggression is spread to the pair in the other tank.
