A tribute to my faithful old tank that has brought me untold numbers of sleepless nights due to the DIY siphon overflow system, loud gurgling sounds just outside my bedroom, bent 5mm glass .. and more importantly, many lessons learnt.

    Hi Killerwhale,

Only got 5 fish inside - 2 Blue tangs, 1 Coral Beauty, 1 firefish, 1 bangaii cardinal. Plan to add a couple more bangaii cardinals later and a lawnmower goby. But the tank's mostly for corals and inverts. I've got 40-50 tiny hermit crabs crawling on the sandbed. Just set up not too long ago, so I'm stocking up real slowly. Plus no $ to buy fish lah, cos just upgraded lighting. []

i see. but for your tank (4ft right ?), what is the estimated maximum number of fishes can be kept without causing any danger to the tank conditions?

i think it is more of the compatibility of the fishes and the size rather than the maximum number of fishes.. the same configuration can have different no. of fishes..

Yep, kel's right. Given a choice I'd really love to keep a large shoal of firefish. [:0] Also, it'd depend on how efficient your filtration system is, and how mature it is. If, let's say, I were to double the number of fishes in it, it's definite that the skimmer I'm using right now won't suffice. In fact I've just emptied 1 of the compartments in my sump to add a second skimmer in, and later the other compartment will hold a refugium. But first I've got to settle my chiller issue first ... no chiller as yet, and temperatures are bordering at 29C ... very dangerous.

temperature is a very critical issue when u keep corals.. and i take this as your water parameters are tiptop...29 deg.. u are treading on very thin ice...

I see. I got a 35 gallon tank but for fish alone, I have about 14 fishes excluding inveterbrates. The fishes are all very healthy and greedy. I have them for almost a year. But I have to change water weekly to lower nitrate (the rest of parameters are well within limit). Is there any reason why I'm able to do that ? I want seek 3rd party advise so that I may not be mislead by my own assumptions.

that is alot of fishes considering the size of your tank!!!
