I always look for the highest surface area, and I read somewhere that glass rings/balls can achieve this better then ceramics ones. I have used some cheap 5 dollars pack and the rings broke into pieces after a few months, I do not know if this will affect the performance or not.

I am currently using JBL, I cannot tell you if it is better but the packaging gave me the most information and it is specifically recommended for internal filter, so just bought it to try.

I do suggest you give JBL a go, compare the information on the box and decide

I'm using Ehiem substrate pro and dennerle filter pearls with good results. According to comparison, Ehiem substrate pro has the highest surface area among the rest.

I was recommended by my friends to use Biohome, but I guess other brands can do the job just fine.

Just make sure you get those sintered glass kind as they can house more BB.

Yupe biohomme or bio homme plus works very well for me.
Actually many brands to choose for in the market.
Just that sometimes its the depth of our pockets and how
    extreme we will go.

my pockets are very shallow, so I always go for the cheaper brands! Works fine for me.

Re: Bio Media Substrat Which one better?

I think SubstratPro would be a good choice. Costs about $35/litre at most LFS.

I personally like SubstratPro as compared to Biohome, because the small shape of the media leaves a smaller allowance for debris and detritus to 'siam' the media and get pumped back into the tank. Don't know if you understand what I mean.

In short, the smaller the better! (Don't forget the surface area, of course...)

If BioHome was available in small pearl-shaped granules then I would go for that...
    Yecch!
