My first time hearing yamatos killing cardinals..It your cardinals sick or anything?. Not that i know of. Are you sure they are yamatos at all?

Hi Guys
just set up a 4 ft, added some cardinals and yamatos in the first wave. after just 2 nights, 80% of cardinals were found dead. finally caught the culprit in action, yamato jumped them from branches tearing bits off cardinals. is this normal? or my yamatos r too hungry?

dun think cardinals are sick....
and they r labeled as yamatos when i bought them
well its was the first i seen too...
none of my buddys have any sightings on attack in their tanks
which is why i came here to find out if anyone else share the same experience

large yamato does attack fish. especially the weak ones.
but 80% dead! more likely your fish ain't healthy as tetra are too fast for them

hmmm....
thats what i thought too.... after i introduced rummy and neon, i realised the fatality rate fell but my cardinals were wiped out. curious to know why too, anyway yamatos getting bigger and bigger, anything i should look out for ?

I think those are not Yamatos. I think you got some piranas in disguise

hahahaaa
no more killings....
but still cant explain the wipeout of my cardinals
my lamp eyes, rummys and neons all doing fine...
puzzled

How long have you set up the tank before adding the fishes? Was it cycled?
And how many have you added at 1 go?
人的一生﹐ 全靠奮斗﹐ 唯有奮斗﹐ 才能成功

cycled about a week or so
around 20 cardinals 10 yamatos
ratio wrong?

yamatoes are known to "bulldoze" at weak or sick fishes for reasons I am not sure, seen it myself in my own tanks several times, took out my yamatoes and I had no more problems. It gave the fishes a chance to heal up and recover. There is no ratio issue, it takes only one to hurt the lot.

thks for the heads up
will continue to monitor
was considering to add more yamatos to tackle some upcoming algae issue
but i probably hold back that thought for the time being
probably just some otos
