Hi all, bought some live rocks from reborn yesterday. Remove the algae from it, clean with saltwater(self-mix)and place into bare tank for curing (just in case). Today, noticed some part of the rocks has greyish white spot on it's surface and it starts to smells. What should I do? Should I try to brush off these whitish spots on the live rocks with toothbrush? can the rock be saved? I've a reliable protein skimmer running con-currently. Or the live rock is beyond resuce and better off to throw away before spreading to other healthy rocks? Will such thing happens?

    Please help....

    Dan

chances are, the live rocks is showing signs of decaying.. and it will spread to the rest of the rocks.. just a note, is your tank new? if so, that might explain why.. your tank is not capable to hold such high bio-load yet.. yes.. live rocks can contribute to the bio-load.. but it is very minute compare to the fishes or corals.. way to rescue the rocks is to find a mature tank and leave it inside first.. and wait till your tank mature first.. if not, very soon, u will get a rotten egg smell in the room..

Kel, thanks for your reply. Yes, my tank is new. Sand is not in the tank yet. Live rock is resting on bare tank at the moment. Do you advise me to remove the decaying live rock from the tank immediately? Any chance of me leaving it for 1-2 weeks and hope it would recover itself? What worries me most are the other rocks which I'm afraid would be affected. My skimmer has been working well and removing lots of stuffs from the tank. What should I do?

    tks, dan...

well.. for me, wat i do is dun add any live rocks till the tank is matured. as for hoping that the rock will recover by itself.. yes, only in a matured tank environment.. definitely not inside your tank.. if u leave it inside for 1-2 weeks.. it is gonna decomposed and will really stink up the whole room..and i do advice u to remove the rocks and leave it with ppl first till ur tank is ready to take them in...
the reason why your skimmer is removing lots of stuff is because your filter has not been able to break down the ammonia generated. anyway, during maturing stage, u should not put the skimmer in.. coz that will slow down the maturing process... on the contrary, u should (having just sand inside and filter on) add stuff that will cause the ammonia to spike/increase drastically and do the waiting game.. i personally go for natural process, i.e, time and patience... rather than using those solutions that will eliminate the NH3...

Could it be because you are not aerating the water?
