i also have this problem too. but there no choice. either you boil the wood, or have yellow water.
do you have a bath tub? if not you could boil the wood there. another soultion to remove the yellow tannins is to filter the water with carbon.
hi all,
i currently have this problem of yellowish greenish cloudy water ever since i add a new piece of driftwood in.. cannot stand the sight of it and its affecting the plants as light cannot penetrate thru..
is there anyway of clearing this? the wood is quite huge so boiling it is impossible.. it always comes back after 2 days after i change the water.. really cannot take it already and must find a solution to this..
thanks![]()

hmm does carbon really help?
if so i dont mind having it for a week just to clear the water..
i dont have a bath tub....
Actually you could try rinsing with hot water. That should help abit.
For me I did bother cos I'm happy with the free tanin it's providing. Anyway, it cleared up within weeks. No plant problems experienced during the tanin leeching from the wood.
tried rinsing with hot water before.. but still not much of a effect..
have just added a carbon pad.. lets see if it makes any difference..
Errr... he said cloudy.
We have to clear something up. IS the water cloudy? When wood leaks tannin and turn the water yellowish, the water is still clear, like looking thru weak chinese tea.
If it is cloudy, then it could be green water, or a bacteria bloom coloured by tannin.
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.
Errr.. the carbon is gonna absorb the trace elements too.
I figure the wood could have tipped your NO3 levels. Check that. If it's high, you may need to readjust your fert regime.

maybe it is green water.. quite hard to determine..
i will remove the carbon pad tmr if it doesnt help..
its not only yellowish but a little cloudy.. sometime i feel it looks a little greenish too.. it could be a bacteria boom(the cloudiness) too as i added lots of new filter media recently..
will try to observe.. im more troubled by the yellowish water.. need to find ways to remove it!!!!!!!!!!!
