what if u simulate a riverbank at the background - plant tall plants so that can hide the skimmer and the filter output - since u hv the effect of a tree roots?

Have you considered blyxa japonica? It May look nice around the "roots"

LLC - for my case, i think lights (144W) and CO2 (2bps) played a big part.
zmzfam - yeah, i am thinking of planting tall plants but couldnt find nice ones. will do it when the right ones come along.
pipsqueak - will your advice in mind. btw, i spent abt $60 on the cork bark. although quite ex, i think its worth it.
IMO if the cork bark is more towards the side, might be easier to come up with scaping ideas.
Really envy the glosso carpet!

noticed that you have moss on the bark... it might spoilt that raw look which is very nice now... so might have to control the growth...
another thing is that it might be a tat too symmetrical... with MU on both sides accentuating the symmetry...
but overall... i really have to say it is a beautiful tank... the "tree" look very natural...

In fact, i have 8 rummy nose and 8 malayan shrimps. thats why cant be seen. will be getting more shortly. Btw, the malayan shrimps seem to be lazy as compared to yamato. I didnt have yamatos in my tank for fear of them eating my taiwan moss.
However, i will most likely remove the moss shortly as they not growing well at all. Cant seem to achieve the effect similar to sam yick's... dunno why. Once i remove the moss, will place some yamatos in there

jovian - i bought the cork bark from aquamart, $40 per kg. I think pasir ris got also, maybe cheaper. No no no, not the whole piece... Bought loose pieces. Thereafter, had to saw, grind and fit the loose pieces together using stainless and nylon screws. See my home page again, more info there.

Nice setup! IMO, I would not add more plants till the Glosso cover the ground completely. Keep it simple, less is more in most cases.
Consider adding SAE, very young ones only, to keep the Glosso common algae at bay.
I am so jealous.... where did you get the trunk?
Hatchet - the whole cabinet plus tank (3ft) costs $450. I ordered from Chan of NA. I must admit that the workmanship is good.
FC - i doubt i will put SAEs in my tank at all. I currently have 3 of them in my 2 ft and they are monsters! I am thinking of inserting 100 malayan shrimps (not yamatoes!), dont know if its advisable. And as for your advice on plants, I agree, less plants creates the openess feeling.

I used to have glosso in the past, SAE and to certain extend shrimps are the most effective crews to handle the glosso's algae. Use only very young SAEs, give them away when they grew too big.
Few years ago, Sam Yick at Parkway used to have a very nice glosso foreground, the best I had ever seen. I saw many malayan shrimps and Yamato partying on glosso’s algae. The glosso’s leafs are dark green, huge and thick, grew densely and stayed flat on the foreground like carpet, this is the setup that inspired me to start the hobby.
