What is the best way to tie java moss such that it grows nicely in a tank with growing into a large messy ball. I notice they tend to grow more orderly closer to the water surface, but on the same note, they start to burn at their tip towards very strong lighting. Any advice? They are the trickest moss for me to scape with.
Herns is right. Moss needs to be trimmed regularly to keep them in shape. I also trimmed off all the loose ends immediately after tying the moss.

Hi KL,
You trim it when it reach certain length or regular period of time ?
For me I have not trim my moss for amlost a year and it started to detached from the drift wood as what Herns said.
What should I do now, retie it ?
As far as I know, after a while, most mosses will detach themselves from the driftwoods that they are tied on. But not Java Moss. Java Moss is one of the few mosses that actually clings on to what it is tied on.
I don't trim my mosses regularly. But when I do, I take out the driftwoods, cut all the strings, remove all the mosses and retie everything again. You have to love mosses to not mind doing this over and over again

The reason Java Moss detached itself overtime when you dont trim them is it gets harder for the lights to penetrate when it gets thicker. The portion that do not get light underneath dies off and detached themselves from the rock or wood overtime.

I get rid my Java moss almost a year ago and replaced it with Peacock and Taiwan Moss. I like these species more than Java moss because they are full of fronds.
