Okay...no choice then...maybe somebody would be kind enough to lend it to you to set your CO2 level during a day when you stay at home the whole day [
]
And man...you need a couple of days sometime to tweak until your CO2 level is constant....plus the fact that CO2 consumption actually goes up as plant mass is more with good growth.

I'm a newbie too so that all that i have to say with a pinch of salt. Experts : Pls dun knock me too hard.
You may wanna remove ur moss for the time being. My experience with moss so far is that once it gets attacked by algae, one would have a hard time removing it by hand later - algae eaters can only do that much.
Otos usually go for brown diatom algae (only?) so dun expect them to tackle ur green spots and BBA.
Snip of all the leaves that r infected by BBA since it will take u some time to balance ur avail nutrients and intro alage eaters. Besides, heard that most algae eaters wun touch BBA unless you starve them for a while.
If u have extra Cabomba, just dump them into ur tank (leave them floating). I reckon that they can useful in 2 ways : 1) Provide some shade (same effect as cutting down lighting hrs) and 2) Soak up nutrients. Plants may not bubble when they subjected to low light (the 1s in my cory tank never bubble) but they r also less likely to succumb to algae.
Lastly, pricing pretty much depends on where you stay lah. No pt going to the other end of the island just to save a few bucks rite? I wun add too many shrimps at 1 go - Having a massive shrimp holocust can rather demoralising.

Well...removing plants from the tank now is not to do any good for the "new" tank for sure...in fact he should add more plants to soak up the excess nutrient due to leaching of substrate fert or other stuff (NO3 might not be existant yet (limiting stuff here) and also PO4. Look at this first to control algae....it works..I tried it and my hairy stuff disappear within a day or two. []

Theodore no matter what i still have to travel... pasir ris only got 2 shops and none of them sell SAE and shrimps other then the feeder type... i lowered my co2 to 3 bps and the lighting period set to 6 hours... hope that helps.

A good move...plants need time to acclimatize imo...I seldom see plants start to settle in and grow the moment it is planted..or is it just me..LOL [] ..(Currently still figuring out how to lower the NO3 level..my sera test kit does not show any drop other than a water change...everything seem to be in place except my CO2 level during lighting period..got to keep it in the 20-30ppm range.)

Wah ... u guys r fast man (3 replies while i was reading other postings).
Peter :
I did found that some plants would start growing soon after planting. E.g. The sags Wynx gave me threw plantlets after 3 days! That's y i usually snip off all the algae infested leaves cos it's just not worth the risk.
Removing the moss shouldnt make much of a difference unless his tank is predominantly moss/fern setup (i doubt so). Moss doesnt grow fast so it wun help in reducing nutrients in the water column which i agree is what he needs to do right now.
I suggested Cabomba rather than the much used duckweed to soak up excess nutrients cos he is mentioned 20-40ppm of NO3 (but negligible PO4). Besides, he is likely to have some spare Cabomba after planting.
Lighthammer :
Have u tried the farms (e.g. Mainland) since u r staying in Pasir Ris?

Do get the PO4 in as well...too low PO4 level could be limiting the uptake of NO3 and traces...thus building up of nutrients which the algae would be happy to consume. Guess some of us has caught the plantbrain virus...LOL []

Hi Theodore
I wanna go to the farms... but its very inaccessible just like Teo's and Gan's... going in isn't a problem but coming out is really a hassle especially with the present weather.
Will give it a few days to see how things turn out.

Lighthammer,
Not sure whether this will help or not? You can check out pet [email protected] be warned prices may not be that friendly. But then again, if they have all well and good.
I do recall that there are some pretty good LFS in Tampines. Have you check them out yet? Can someone confirm this?
You can probably go to Aquamart, next to the geylang police station...they are pretty well stocked on what you need...malayan shrimps, etc..

Yes, do get the PO4 in as well. As for you, some fishes to begin with feeding will help. All you need is just a little PO4 thru your feeding. Allen has mentioned that your N is probably coming from your base hence try to go easy on fert with N during this initial stage. The only things that will be hurt during cycling are live stocks - fishes, shrimps etc - as a result of you NH3 and NO2 spikes. Plants will enjoy those spikes for N.----------------

A little fert during the initial stage, I feel, wouldn't hurt. Plants at this stage haven't got root structure to uptake nutrients from the base yet. So help them with a little liquid fert.
Personally, to help yourself in troubleshooting, don't do everything at one go. Start by lowering CO2 and light first and if that does not help, ask yourself "why?quot; then proceed to next step. Enjoy![]()

Errr... right now his substrate is leaching into the water column, and its pretty nutrient rich... I wouldn't advise adding anything to the water... in fact water changes might be good.
Allen
When I first start a tank...I will try to change 50% water every 2 days...why because after the initial planting, there is bound to nutrient leech..therefore water change will help to dilute the nutrient rich water...

Hi all, went to GenX today and got meself malayan shrimps and SAEs. Just added them in after acclimatization(spelling?). Will see how it goes. Thanks to all of you for giving me all the advice that i need to maintain the tank. Will post pic soon after awhile more... CHEERS []

i find that it is a good no3 absorber.
