I just got some Hair Grass fromthe workshop and another purchased somewhere before. The pack I was given ...was in loose bunches...some roots tangled all over..and THe one I bought was put in s small undergravel filter..with 2 satay sticks pooked throught it...to hold the untanged roots as well as bunch of hairgrass to the the filter prevent it from floating.

I have been getting some problems,, some hair grass still floats up after a while even though the roots have gone down to the substrate.

just wondering...if maybe the I have to have a deeper substrate...so that I canplant the hairgrass deeper....and how do I maintain the growth??by cutting the tips of the grass??

To fully cover a tank....do I just plant sparingly..or fully cover the floor with hairgrass??

Take 4-5 as a group and 'Fall them in' about 1cm apart.

if your tank is big and the HG is not enough, go get more.

Plant just deep enough to have the roots and some of the lower white portion covered. I planted them too deep and now, whole carpet of HG is 'short' and new growth shows only 3/4 or 1/2 of the actual length.

    joachimsim,

You need pincers for this job, no fingers. Use as little strands of hairgrass as possible for each plunge. Spread them evenly on the intended ground.

what is the size of your gravel? it should be about 1-3mm.
if your gravel is too big, then the hair grass will anchored properly. using a tweezer helps in getting them pushed into the gravel. after planting, some do float so you'll need to replant them.

For my HG tank, the gravel is very thinly sprinkled above the cocopeat. So I need not plant them so deep.

There are many species of HG. At Teo Farm, you can get the shorter and longer varieties.

Just give it a hair cut to your desired length. It will send out runners, or if you can't wait for it to cover the intended area, get more and plant them 1-2 cm apart and wait for them to grow.

husky, it is said that trimming the hairgrass increase/promote propagation... simply give them a haircut.. since HG r slow grower, u need to space them out, it takes a few months before u achieve a nice looking turf

planting most plants with tweezers is much easier than using fat, clumsy fingers. Try and see.

You can't place anything close using fingers, and some areas can only be accessed using a tweezer. Futhermore, you risk injuring the stems more.

The tweezers found at LFS are highly reccomended. It's a good investment. Others may be too sharp at the ends and damage the stems. Lightly but firmly, pinch at the base of the plant(above roots), and plant it.

I fully agree with pipsqueak. It is the tools I use the most, other than scissors during pruning. I use it to pick up debris like dead leafs in the tank too.
